    3. Why don't one of you Northern folk tell our friends across the seas what HASLETT is? I don't know, really, and I've never eaten it. It's not really a Liverpool thing (I don't think). 3. Morning again Marged, Can't say I've ever heard of Haslett, it's either public schools in Michigan or a harvesting company in Australia. The oracle says "I used to buy it to put in your dad's sandwiches" . So what is it oh great one ? "It's meat". Like a paste ? "No they used to cut it in slices". There's canny ! So I guess 50% sawdust , 25% school books and 25% combine harvester. Dave :-) Will a real celebrity cook please step forward ........... ----- Original Message ----- From: "Marged" <marged@btinternet.com> To: <NORTHERN-ENGLAND-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, November 24, 2000 10:08 AM Subject: [NTH-ENG] HASLETT > Why don't one of you Northern folk tell our friends across the seas what HASLETT > is? 3. Haslett was a poor man's .....what. I cna't describe it. You could buy it in blocks like cheese except it wasn't like cheese. It sometimes looked like pressed meat except it didn't because it was a sort of mucky grey/black/spotted............. But - It could be cut with a good knife and sliced for sandwiches which, in them days, were called butties. Nothing like bacon butties, I hasten to add, but just butties! Which had bread and something, probably dripping, and HASLETT! Famous in it's day but....................... It was very greasy and crunchy and gristley [have I managed the spelling, because even thinking about it is making me run in several directions at once. Hope none of you are eating. Bon apetit as they say in Greece. At least the french do when they're on holiday! NOTE - no capital letter.
