    3. Hi Brian, If your machine is relatively recent , then the choice is between 72 pin chips and the DIMM 168 pin. 72 were the most common on Pentium systems ( normally 4 white sockets on PCB ), then the 168pin jobs came in. Your mother board may have both types of slot, but you really need to look in the handbook at "memory configurations" or similar. Some boards have restrictions on what chips you put where , and how many. 72 pin strip is 4 1/4" long, with or without parity ( 9 or 8 ICs on strip , sometimes just 3 ? ). The 168 pin is longer still , I think - never seen one though. Easy check - take one out and count connections on PCB ( careful - static sensitive ). Sometimes when used in pairs in adjacent slots, the chips have to have the same memory capacity. It really is best to look in the motherboard book if you have it. Sorry if I sound a bit vague - I used to leave it to the service dept ..... ! Will it fit, I ask myself. Or is everything the same size, now? 168 Pin seems a lot. In the days of 4 MB SIMMs I used to fit them myself but I think things are a bit more complicated now.
