    3. Hi Maggie, I dont think so. Wasnt he honoured and accepted, then becoming Sir Alec Douglas Hume. There is no earlier record of a family of either the Peerage or Baronetage with the name Hume. There was a Catherine Hume entitled to a courtesy title in the 70's and that (I assume ) was obtained not through marriage but being the daughter of; prior to marriage in her own right in Ancaster. Best wishes, Mikey ----- Original Message ----- From: <MagsB1942@aol.com> To: <NORTHERN-ENGLAND-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, November 25, 2000 9:18 PM Subject: Re: [NTH-ENG] That Mad Cow > In a message dated 25/11/00 17:37:15 GMT Standard Time, > sharpe@britishlibrary.net writes: > > << Wedgie Benn the greatest Prime Minister we didn't get. > Politicians nowadays scrabble about for a peerage he rejected one (Lord > Stansgate) to do a politicians job. > As everywhere in the world honesty and integrity gets a politician nowhere. > >> > > Wasn't it Douglas Hume who also had a title and rejected it? > > Maggie > > Surname interests: > BICKER, MILLER, SPRATT, MARSH mainly in Kent > MATTHEWS, GRANT, COAFFEE, BERESFORD, SWEENEY > in Middx, Bucks, USA and elsewhere > > > ==== NORTHERN-ENGLAND Mailing List ==== > Visit the lists Pulse Page here, > http://212.19.69.91/north/ >

    3. He rejected it to become Prime Minister because the Tories couldn't come up with a suitable candidate from the Commons, Which is subtly different.
