I agree Marged. Years ago they would be kept in a home, where they couldn't harm themselves or others. But of course, the do-gooders thought they would be better with 'care in the community'. Not only that but now many of the homeless people on the streets are these former patients. My brother-in-law in Toronto used to run halfway houses for former mental patients. They had their own rooms in small apartment buildings. Live in staff were available to help when needed. When the present Conservative government got in Ontario the government grants were discontinued and the halfway houses disappeared. My brother-in-law found another job so he was ok but I often wondered what happened to all those people in the houses. I have seen homeless people in Toronto sleeping on the streets in below zero (Fahrenheit) weather. No wonder every year some freeze to death. There is no excuse for this in the Western world.
