Christian Computing Jesus and Satan are sitting around in the world between, having an argument over who is the better programmer. They discuss this for several hours until they agree to hold a contest, with God as the judge. Sitting at their computers, they begin typing furiously, lines of code filling up the screens, for almost three hours. Seconds before the contest is to end, a bolt of lightning takes out the electricity. A few moments later, power is restored, and God announces that time is up. He asks Satan to show him his programming. Visibly upset, Satan says, "I have nothing! I lost it all when the power went out." "Let's see if Jesus has fared any better," God says. Jesus pulls up his screen and shows God a vivid display of Angels with lutes and harps as the voices of an angelic choir resound from the speakers. Satan is shocked. "But how?" he cries. "I lost everything, but Jesus' program is intact?" "How did he do it?" God smiled and said "Everyone knows...Jesus saves. David Knight dmknight@optusnet.com.au

Hi, Here is a Kinship Glossary: http://www.as.ua.edu/ant/Faculty/murphy/436/kinship.htm Extended Family: "A domestic group or composite of domestic groups consisting of two or more nuclear families linked together through parent and child (patrilineal extended family, matrilineal extended family) or through siblings (fraternal or sorroral extended family)." (RK:149). The social unit, usually co-residing, consisting of two or more nuclear families affiliated through an extension of parent-child relationships; i.e., the nuclear family of a married adult joined to that of his/her parents (NG-359). Hi Jean Yes, It's interesting this age thing. The web site will eventually represent two cousins stories of tracing their ancestors, and hopefully, will be typical of what it's like to do the tracing. My grandmother in Sunderland, when she married in Dec 1897 said she was 21 - one witness was her twin sister Margaret ( another mystery also 19 !) . We know Mary Jane was only 19 at the time ( a registry office wedding ). Dad Daniel McLaughlan was still alive and living in the area ( my mother remembers him , and she wasn't born 'till 1916 ) . Gran had only known my grandfather for a few weeks, so maybe there's the answer. Mind you, the first <recorded> child , my aunt Ethel wasn't born until October 1898. Ethel decided to marry and not tell anybody - unfortunately my grandfather was the cabman who took her to the church ! Now there's a story ! Mother you'll never guess what happened today ...... I also wonder what the odds are for having 3 sets of twins ? Well done Daniel ! ( and 2 different wives to boot ) The age thing is quite simple - if you're 21 then you don't need dad's permission ............ A fascinating story ...... regards Dave ------------- I enjoyed your web site, Dave. You are right about the age on marriage certificates. The ones in my family have no resemblance to the actual ages. In one case everyone was underage for marriage so I suspect that is why the ages were inflated. Hi All On the subject of old photos, there's a classic 1880 ( we think ) photo of my Great Grandmother and 4 children on my family history website - not finished and probably never will be ! It's gallery 1 from the Picture Gallery link. This is a "tin plate" photo of about 2 1/2 by 1 1/2 " depicting my great grandmother and 4 children. We think that we are looking at 4 boys , despite the dress of the child on gg's lap. This puts the picture as pre 1881. There's also a picture of "the Oracle" and her only surviving brother and sister from a family of 16. We currently know only 13 children , but we're working on the other 3 at £6.50 a guess ! The URL is http://212.19.69.91/ancestors/ Please bear in mind that this is "work in progress" and may contravene the data protection act , and the "shape of bananas maximum curvature EEC directive". If anybody can identify the "unknown boys" - hello cousin ! Actually, Dave, a friend of mine had a sister-in-law with three sets of twins and two husbands in about 8 years. When she got pregnant the last time my friend got a letter saying there was only one baby this time. Everyone was relieved to hear that. The lady in question was less than thirty and had 9 children! In Halifax there is a society for parents with multiple births. One family had one child followed by twins followed by triplets. All were under six. This decided one parent of fraternal twins whom I knew not to risk another pregnancy. The tendency to fraternal twins does run in families and is much more common for Europeans and Africans than other groups. Fraternal twins are rare in Japan. Hi Maggie Roll on summer indeed - I'm sick of looking at 3" high <wet> grass all the time ! Back to the flood plain problem again - if you build roads on it , you can't expect much else ......... May venture up the road and have a paddle tomorrow ! On balance - I'd rather have snow, Do you remember ( in the 60's I think ) when it snowed heavily in March ? I remember it because I fell off my bike and landed on my a**se and couldn't get up again. Hi Maggie, You are quite welcome and thank you for responding - it is appreciated. And thank you for 'missing' me - it is good to know that someone cares ! I really appreciate it. Snow here has been just flurries; we haven't received the heavy snows of the north or Canada. Most of our snow has melted, the grass is on its way to turning green and the buds are swelling in anticipation of spring. Regards, Glenda >Thanks for the site.
