    1. [NTH-ENG] A color for England
    2. Glenda R. Wilson
    3. Hi, I am color coding some of my lines and wanted to ask you what color would be a good representation for England ? A lady has told about the color coding method she uses to show different lineages so she could easily find which family she is looking for. There were many suggestions such as discs, notebooks, folders, files, and labels, to name just a few; but I will only be starting with notebooks and labels. Blue and green have been chosen for two of the lines; now I need a color for the English lineage and wanted your advice. Thank you, Glenda

    1. [NTH-ENG] Fw: [CHS] Hardwicke's Marriage Act
    2. Jean White
    3. Another great explanation from Ruth Paley and Roy Stockdill Jean in Nova Scotia jphwhite@ns.sympatico.ca ----- Original Message ----- From: "Roy Stockdill" <roystock@compuserve.com> To: <CHESHIRE-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, February 26, 2001 6:32 PM Subject: [CHS] Hardwicke's Marriage Act Ruth Paley wrote..... >>Joni has asked me to explain Hardwicke's Marriage Act. It was an Act of Parliament passed in 1753 which only applied to England and Wales. Until then it was possible to marry under common law - each party had to declare that they were marrying the other and that was it - no need for a church or a priest. For those who wanted a priest (and there were plenty who did) you could have a service of sorts and it did not matter where the ceremony was performed. There was no need to register a marriage and not surprisingly it was quite often difficult for people to know whether a legal marriage had been contracted or not. Hardwicke's Marriage Act required couples intending to marry to do so in the parish church or other public chapel after the calling of banns (public notice of their intention to marry) on three successive Sundays. Those under 21 required the consent of their parents/guardians, although the age of marriage remained unchanged (still 14 for a boy and 12 for a girl). The marriage had to be conducted by an ordained minister of the Church of England: the only exceptions allowed (until 1837) were for Jewish and Quaker ceremonies. Couples wishing to avoid the calling of banns could do so by obtaining a licence from the bishop or archbishop or other senior ecclesiastical officer, but this was very much more expensive. The public registration of the marriage also became compulsory -which is why family historian's lives get much easier from then on!<< FURTHER to Ruth's excellent explanation, it is worth noting that the Act was subtitled: "An Act for the Better Preventing of Clandestine Marriages." Until Hardwicke's Marriage Act came into force (in 1754, though it was passed through Parliament the previous year), the most notorious places for the conducting of clandestine marriages were prison chapels, especially in London's infamous Fleet Prison where 217 marriages were performed the day before the Act came into operation. Many registers of clandestine marriages in London are at the PRO. Dissenters could not marry outside the Church of England (except for Jews and Quakers, as Ruth stated) until the Dissenters Marriage Act of 1836 was passed, after which they could marry in their own chapels or civil ceremonies. 1. [NTH-ENG] New beginnings.....
    2. Beginning today I will no longer worry about yesterday. It is in the past and the past will never change. Only I can change by choosing to do so. Beginning today I will no longer worry about tomorrow. Tomorrow will always be there, waiting for me to make the most of it. But I cannot make the most of tomorrow without first making the most of today. Beginning today I will look in the mirror and I will see a person worthy of my respect and admiration. This capable person looking back at me is someone I enjoy spending time with and someone I would like to get to know better. Beginning today I will cherish each moment of my life. I value this gift bestowed upon me in this world and I will unselfishly share this gift with others. I will use this gift to enhance the lives of others. Beginning today I will take a moment to step off the beaten path and to revel in the mysteries I encounter. I will face challenges with courage and determination. I will overcome what barriers there may be which hinder my quest for growth and self-improvement. Beginning today I will take life one day at a time, one step at a time. Discouragement will not be allowed to taint my positive self-image, my desire to succeed or my capacity to love. Beginning today I walk with renewed faith in human kindness. Regardless of what has gone before, I believe there is hope for a brighter and better future. Beginning today I will open my mind and my heart. I will welcome new experiences. I will meet new people. I will not expect perfection from myself nor anyone else: perfection does not exist in an imperfect world. But I will applaud the attempt to overcome human foibles. Beginning today I am responsible for my own happiness and I will do things that make me happy . . . admire the beautiful wonders of nature, listen to my favorite music, pet a kitten or a puppy, soak in a bubble bath . . . pleasure can be found in the most simple of gestures. Beginning today I will learn something new; I will try something different; I will savor all the various flavors life has to offer. I will change what I can and the rest I will let go. I will strive to become the best me I can possibly be. Beginning today. And every day.

    2. Thought this might amuse you all! Have you heard about the next planned "Survivor" show? 6 men will be dropped on an island with 1 van and 4 kids each, for 6 weeks Each kid plays two sports and either takes music or dance classes. There is no access to fast food. Each man must take care of his 4 kids, keep his assigned house clean, correct all homework, complete science projects, cook, do laundry, etc. The men only have access to television when the kids are asleep and all chores are done: There is only one TV between them and there is no remote. The men must shave their legs and wear makeup daily, which they must apply themselves either while driving or while making four lunches. They must attend weekly PTA meetings; clean up after their sick children at 3:00 a.m; make an Indian hut model with six toothpicks, a tortilla and one marker; and get a 4 year old to eat a serving of peas. The kids vote them off based on performance. The one who wins gets to go back to his job!

    1. [NTH-ENG] 15 Census Spreadsheets Available!
    2. Gary
    3. I have created 15 different electronic spreadsheets to share and to help fellow researchers organize their census data from the U.S., Canada, England, Ireland and Scotland. All of my spreadsheets are free to anyone who wants a copy (or 15!). The U.S. Federal spreadsheet covers 1790-1920 with pages for the 1880-1920 Soundex. The other countries are covered as follows; Canada 1851-1901, England 1841-1891, Ireland 1821-1911 and Scotland 1841-1891. Each spreadsheet faithfully reproduces the format of the original returns, so they are great for printing blank forms as well as recording your data. Recording census data electronically is a great way to permanently organize, preserve, archive and share the census data we accumulate over the years. At http://www.censustools.com you can read about the spreadsheets and see screenshots of each. I also have a FAQ page and my first monthly newsletter that I released just this weekend. And of course you can download a free copy of whichever spreadsheet(s) you need. Gary __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Get email at your own domain with Yahoo! 2. Mikey
    3. If Earth's population were shrunk into a village of just 100 people--with all the human ratios existing in the world still remaining -- what would this tiny, diverse village look like? That's exactly what Philip M.Harter, an MD at the Stanford University School of Medicine, attempted to figure out. This is what he found... 57 would be Asian 21 would be European, 14 would be from the Western Hemisphere 8 would be African 52 would be female 48 would be male 70 would be nonwhite 30 would be white 70 would be non-Christian 30 would be Christian 89 would be heterosexual 11 would be homosexual 6 people would possess 59 percent of the entire world's wealth, and all 6 would be from the United States. 80 would live in substandard housing 70 would be unable to read 50 would suffer from malnutrition 1 would be near death 1 would be pregnant 1 would have a college education 1 would own a computer Regards, Mikey. 1. [NTH-ENG] Thank you all for condolences
    2. Kostas & Angela Nicolaou
    3. Hello dear friends, I'm back from UK and just wanted to thank everyone who offered their condolences on the sudden death of my dear dad. I must say that he passed away very peacefully as if in his sleep and as he would wanted to depart this world, I'm sure, with a half finished rollie (I'm sure only scousers will understand this humour). The only sad thing really was that there had to be a post mortem and we won't know what he died of until March 13th when they will hold an inquest. We all know that our parents won't be with us forever, and I and my family are comforted in the knowledge that dad didn't suffer as so many do, especially poor Sue's dad. My heart goes out to you Sue. We have been there before, so we do know how it feels as we lost our sister of cancer at the age of 33. Special thanks to dear Brian B for remembering my birthday. I'll be up and running when I've sorted out these 800 + e-mails. God bless, and best wishes Angela Cyprus
