Welcome back Mike (dada) Sorry to hear you have been having problems. Best wishes Angela Cyprus
Hi All, We did this about 12 months ago. Coast us about A$500 to get it done professionally but ended up with more then 1GB memory. The kids still don't want it now as it's ****"TOO SLOW" ****. so I'm using it it for all my FH stuff and "NOBODY" is allowed to touch it now as things disappear off it after Mr Nobody has been here. If I catch him he's in big trouble!!!!!!!!!!! Well worth the money - 'cos at the rate I'm going I'll never fill it!!!!!!! I seem to have deleted my copy of the BORLAND DATABASE ENGINE which has brought my transcription efforts to a grinding halt. Can anyone please send me a copy or give me a download address. Jim Sharpe
Hi Maggie, I assume you are correct as now approaching the height of summer, but then again some parts of the Island may well get 2 Harvests as happens in the middle east. Rather weird at first to see two orchards next to each other, one with no leaves and the other in fruit! Mine is safe too nowadays. My grandson is allowed to use my old one - it has some educational stuff on but I haven't put it on this one. I do typing and book-keeping so everyone knows that my 'new' one is for me only - otherwise they might not get any presents this year...lol Maggie --- Marged <marged@btinternet.com> wrote: > I feel very privileged as no one in this house wants > to touch my computer, and I > can have it all to myself. > > Marj > > > ----- Original Message ----- > From: Trish Michael <gmichael@acay.com.au> > To: <NORTHERN-ENGLAND-L@rootsweb.com> > Sent: Monday, November 20, 2000 7:16 PM > Subject: Re: [NTH-ENG] Re: memory upgrade > > > | Hi All, We did this about 12 months ago. Dear Sheila, Len et al, Here is the introduction to the above. I decided to post it to the list as the "Gospel" itself has been of special interest to scholars & is a Gospel that I believe deserves greater general public awareness & recognition. The Introduction by HELMUT KOESTER: The Gospel of Thomas is a collection of traditional sayings, prophecies, proverbs, and parable of Jesus. The Coptic Gospel of Thomas was translated from the Greek; in fact, several fragments of this Greek Version have been preserved, and can be dated to 200 C.E. Thus the Greek ( or even Syriac or Aramaic ) collection was composed in the period before about 200 C.E., possible as early as the second half of the first century, in Syria, Palestine, or Mesopotamia. The authorship of the Gospel of Thomas is attributed to Didymos Judas Thomas, that is, Judas "the Twin," who was identified particularly within the Syrian Church as the apostle and twin brother of Jesus. The relationship of the Gospel of Thomas to the New Testament gospels has been a matter of special interest : many of the sayings of the Gospel of Thomas have parallels in the synoptic gospels ( Mathew, Mark, and Luke). A comparison of the sayings in the Gospel of Thomas with theri parallels in the synoptic gospels suggests that the sayings in the Gospel of Thomas either are present in a more primitive form or are developments of a more primitive forrm of such sayings. Indeed, the Gospel of Thomas resembles the synoptic sayings source, often called "Q" (from the German word Quelle, "source"), which was the common source of sayings used by Mathew & Luke. Hence, the Gospel of Thomas and its sources of sayings and parables which are closely related to the sources of the New Testament Gospels. The influenece of Gnostic theology is clearly present in the Gospel of Thomas, thought it is not possible to ascribe the work to any particular school or sect. The collected sayings are designated as " the secret sayimngs which the living Jesus spoke." Thus the collection intends to be esoteric: the key to understanding is the interpretation or secret meaning of the sayings, for " whover finds the interpretation of these sayings will not experience death." According to the Gospel of Thomas, the basic religious experience is not only the recognition of ones divine identity, but more specefically the recognition of ones origin ( the light ) and destiny ( the repose). In order to return to ones origin, the disciple is to become separate from the world by " stripping off" the fleshly garments and "passing by " the present corruptible existence ; then the disciple can experience the new world, the kingdom of light, peace, and life. The numeration of one hundred and fourteen sayings is not in the manuscript but is followed by most scholars today. (End) Yours, Mikey. .

Dear all, A forward for members in the USA or with Genealogical interests there. Best, Mikey. There is pressure to start charging for databases that were planned to be available free. Many organizations are finding it much harder and much more expensive to get databases online than originally planned. Project deadlines are being missed. Non-profit implementers are now asking for donations to support the cost of maintaining the databases. Here is a recap of the status of some important databases. Ellis Island Passenger Lists http://www.ellisisland.org/history.html Plans call for extracting all passenger arrivals at the Port of New York (Ellis Island) from 1892-1924. The project was started as a LDS (Mormon) Family History Department project some years ago with thousands of volunteers extracting the information. The decision makers in Utah elected to turn over their efforts to the Statue of Liberty-Ellis Island Foundation who will complete the project and make it available in Spring 2001, at Ellis Island only, as "The American Family Immigration History Center." Plans call for placing it on the Internet thereafter but no commitment has been made regarding a date. There will be a fee for using the database at Ellis Island; therefore, it can be assumed there will be a fee to use it on the Internet. Hamburg Emigration Lists. http://www.hamburg.de/LinkToYourRoots/english/welcome.htm Launched in November 1999 on the Internet with emigration records extracted for the years 1890-1893, this venture had the ambitious plan to add a year a month. No additional years have been added since, but there have been more records added for the original time period. The initial offering was to make data available free, now they are asking for voluntary contributions to the project. There has been no commitment as to when additional years will be added. 1920 U.S. Census Two commercial ventures are competing for patron dollars: Ancestry.com at http://www.ancestry.com/search/io/main.htm and Genealogydatabase.com at http://www.genealogydatabase.com/. Ancestry.com has already placed selected portions of the census online without an index -- a head-of-household index planned for the future. Genealogydatabase.com is still claiming they will have all censuses (1790-1920) online by the end of this year. To tweak Ancestry.com's nose, this group states on their Home Page that "other sites may offer parts of the census, but no one else has it all." They state there is over 3.5 terabytes (trillion bytes) of "highest-quality information." Cost for the Ancestry.com service is $59.95 per year ($39.95 if you are already an Ancestry.com subscriber which also costs $59.95 per year). The other service has refused to pre-announce their prices. Pages of Testimony This database, which identifies more than 3 million Jews murdered in the Holocaust, was computerized when a grant was given to Yad Vashem in Jerusalem, the owner of the collection. Each Page of Testimony gives the individual's name, year of birth, names of mother and father, name of spouse (often including maiden name of women), circumstances of death, name/address of the submitter, and other information. When you order a copy of the document, you now receive a computerized version. It is easier to read than the handwriting on the original document. Though never a public commitment, there has been talk about having the database on the Internet at the end of this year, which now seems unlikely. There are instructions on how to order Pages of Testimony by e-mail, fax or in writing at http://www.yadvashem.org.il/remembrance/hallofnames/index.html Other Potential Databases Most institutions are computerizing the information they have for internal use. Have you gone to a cemetery lately? There is a good chance that if you ask for the location of a grave, the clerk will search a computer database for the information. What an incredible boon it would be to family history research if the cemeteries got together and created a massive database online that could be searched so you could locate the grave of an ancestor. The International Tracing Service in Arolsen, Germany, is the largest repository of information about individuals caught up in the Holocaust. They have computerized their index to assist them in more rapidly processing requests for information about persons caught up in the Holocaust. What a great help to people wanting to determine the fate of family if this information was placed on the Internet. Online U.S. Searchable Vital Record Indexes =========================================== A professional genealogist, Joe Beine of Denver, Colorado, has developed an Internet site that includes many links to searchable U.S. vital record indexes. It is located at http://home.att.net/~wee-monster/deathrecords.html
Dear All, NSW is having major floods. Wheat harvest expected to be down by 1 million tonnes - hundreds of millions of dollars - let alone roads, bridges livestock etc. Queensland central coast - Mackay - has had officially 430mm and unofficially 600 + mms of rain in 4 days!! The damage bill has not yet been assessed. Mikey.
Dear all, Another. Best wishes, Mikey. THE CENSUS TAKER It was the first day of census, and all through the land; The pollster was ready ... a black book in hand. He mounted his horse for a long dusty ride; His book and some quills were tucked close by his side. A long winding ride down a road barely there; Toward the smell of fresh bread wafting, up through the air. The woman was tired, with lines on her face; And wisps of brown hair she tucked back into place. She gave him some water ... as they sat at the table; And she answered his questions ... the best she was able. He asked of her children... Yes, she had quite a few; The oldest was twenty, the youngest not two. She held up a toddler with cheeks round and red; his sister, she whispered, was napping in bed. She noted each person who lived there with pride; And she felt the faint stirrings of the wee one inside. He noted the sex, the color, the age... The marks from the quill soon filled up the page. At the number of children, she nodded her head; And saw her lips quiver for the three that were dead. The places of birth she "never forgot"; Was it Kansas? or Utah? or Oregon ... or not? They came from Scotland, of that she was clear; But she wasn't quite sure just how long they'd been here. They spoke of employment, of schooling and such; They could read some .and write some .. though really not much. When the questions were answered, his job there was done; So he mounted his horse and he rode toward the sun. We can almost imagine his voice loud and clear; "May God bless you all for another ten years." Now picture a time warp ... its' now you and me; As we search for the people on our family tree. We squint at the census and scroll down so slow; As we search for that entry from long, long ago. Could they only imagine on that long ago day; That the entries they made would effect us this way? If they knew, would they wonder at the yearning we feel; And the searching that makes them so increasingly real. We can hear if we listen the words they impart; Through their blood in our veins and their voice in our heart. Author Unknown
Dear all, Being as it has been quiet of late! Sherlock Holmes and Dr Watson went on a camping trip. After a good meal and a bottle of wine they lay down in their tent for the night, and went to sleep. Some hours later, Holmes awoke and nudged his faithful friendawake. "Watson, look up at the sky and tell me what you see." Watson replied, "I see millions and millions of stars." "What does that tell you?" Holmes questioned. Watson pondered for a minute. "Astronomically, it tells me that there are millions of galaxies and potentially billions of planets. Astrologically, I observe that Saturn is in Leo. Chronologically, I deduce that the time is approximately a quarter past three. Theologically, I can see that God is all powerful and that we are small and insignificant. Meteorologically, I suspect that we will have a beautiful day tomorrow. What does it tell you?" Holmes was silent for a minute, then spoke. "Watson, you ass. Someone has stolen our tent." ************************************** STOLEN ITEMS A drunk phoned police to report that thieves had been in his car. "They've stolen the dashboard, the steering wheel, the brake pedal, even the accelerator," he cried out. However, before the police investigation could start, the phone rang a second time and the same voice came over the line. "Never mind," he said with a hiccup, "I got in the back seat by mistake." Best wishes, Mikey.
Tom, I haven't heard much from you lately & am wondering if you are still on this list? I have found, from another site, a person who claims to have Robson's in her area. Please contact me if you wish this information. She may have something you can use in your search. Becky (Hall) Cole
Dear all, I cant recall posting this before, so here go's: Harken? <g> How about the home for the blind built in Oslo and due to be opened by the King of Norway? Just before the official party arrived it was discovered that the workmen hadn't quite finished the gents cloakroom, and the washbasins weren't fitted. They grabbed three builders hods and put them on the wall where they looked quite modern and scandinavian to match the decor. All was well, until three months later they found the hods were still there and in use as washbasins. Which just goes to show that "A Hod is as Good as a Sink to a Blind Norse!" Gives one that sinking feeling eh! Perhaps they had been used as something else too? <g> Best, Yours, Mikey.
