    3. Marged, I've been sent one fiche of deaths to transcribe. It is quite formidable when you first look at it. But after about half an hour I was quite into the swing of it. Give it a try. I have done quite a bit of transcribing in the past. e.g. the 1871 census for North Staffs and also some for Rod Neep for the Archive CD books project. I have enjoyed it all, because it is worthwhile if it is going to help others with their research. By the way, welcome back. Pam. 3. That's the last time I'm saying that this year. But I do wish it to you all. We had a lovely time, especially the journey up there which was quite spectacular. The snow was cleared from the roads, and just looked beautiful on the hills. You will be surprised to hear that once I landed in Lois's house, I stayed indoors the whole week-end. Not one for getting cold if it's not necessary! MARGED --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. Checked by AVG anti-virus system (http://www.grisoft.com). 2. Marged
    3. Just reading what you both wrote about elderly parents "not quite making it". My mum's next door neighbour died three weeks before her hundredth birthday, we thought it was so sad, and I was glad (although not a royalist) that the Queen Mother did make it to her 100th. After my Nanna Jones died in 1969, aged 83, I felt quite angry whenever I saw 100th birthday pictures in the local press, as I felt it would have been quite reasonable to expect her to live another 17 years, especially when I needed her so much. Nobody was ever THAT that interested in me again, once she died. MARGED --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. Checked by AVG anti-virus system (http://www.grisoft.com). 3. Hi Dave - No I didn't see that - I am a sucker for a bargain but I don't believe anyone can do this when BT own all the equipment. Lots of people have made the offer, such as Freeserve, but it always comes unstuck when you get to the bottom line. Marged Did you see an AD on TV for an ISP charging £89 a year with no call charges ( 0800 number ) ? http://www.thefreeinternet.net/ I think it was ................ 3. | | COLOMBO, Sri Lanka (Dec. 27) - Science fiction writer Arthur C. Clarke, | author of "2001: A Space Odyssey," urged the world in a New Year message | Wednesday to celebrate "the real beginning" of the new millennium on Jan. 1. | "The intelligent minority of this world will mark 1 January 2001 as the real | beginning of the 21 century and the Third Millennium," British-born Clarke | said in a statement from his home in Colombo. | | "Those who celebrated the twin events a year too soon are also invited to | join in the celebrations," said Clarke, who has been deluged with requests | for media interviews ahead of the New Year. | | Clarke felt so strongly about people calling the year 2000 the beginning of | the new millennium that he issued a statement in 1999 to try and correct | them. | | "Though some people have great difficulty in grasping this... we'll have had | only 99 years of this century by January 1, 2000," he said at the time. | | Clarke thanked film director Stanley Kubrick, who made a movie based on "2001 | A Space Odyssey," for the almost universally acknowledged association between | himself and the year 2001. | | "Perhaps no other year before or since 1984 has been awaited with such eager | anticipation (and I like to think, with far less apprehension)," Clarke said, | referring to George Orwell's book "1984," which was written in the 1940s and | predicted a grim, totalitarian world by 1984. | Clarke also made a New Year wish for peace in Sri Lanka, the war-torn country | in which he has lived for more than 30 years. | | Clarke, who turned 83 last month, has lived to see many of his predictions | come true including a then controversial theory in 1945 which forecast a | world linked by a network of geo-stationary satellites. | Reuters | --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free.
