    1. [NFK] A "HART" PROBLEM

    3. Hi all, I have been trying to find the baptism of ELEANOR HART c.1776 in the North Walsham area without success,i have her marriage to JAMES CROWE 15.06.1796, (both single of this parish), and also her burial, age 44. in North Walsham 24.03.1820, but i cannot find anything else about her in the parish register. I realise that being 'single of this parish' is only where the individual is residing at the time of the marriage and not a guide to their origin,so using parish locator i identified all the parishes within a 5 mile radius of North Walsham and worked my way through all the parish registers.Other than a couple of entries in Smallburgh there were no entries for the name Hart at all. I then expanded the search area to a 10 mile radius, in all about 100 parishes, but still no Hart families. So i changed tactics and recorded all the entries in the North Walsham register for the name Hart between 1750-1800,and the results were suprising considering our previous lack of success, a total of 30 entries. Digging a bit deeper i found that there were 5 families having children baptised during this period, 3 of which only had 1 child baptised in North Walsham, which is strange for 250 years ago. Also there were 9 marriages for members of the Hart family, all shown as 'of this parish' who were not baptised in North Walsham, and again 3 burials with no baptism found. I then wondered if all these missing Harts belonged to an independent church and were just married or buried at North Walsham parish church ,but a trip to the Norfolk Record Office showed that there were only three independent churches in the area,Worstead, Bradfield and Aylsham, none of which had the name Hart in their registers. I am now stumped for ideas and have no idea where to look next to find these missing people. Has any other lister come across a similar problem, Many thanks, Richard Myhill richardmyhill43@btinternet.com

    3. No idea but one thought- I see that North Walsham had its own parish workhouse before the Erpingham union was set up and the date is early enough for your Hart-any chance that a baptism might have been done there and recorded apart from those in church? Is there an indication that they were well off enough to travel to Cromer or Norwich Perhaps they just did not bother-one wonders what the uptake on baptisms was at different times.
