    3. I dont think so because it is written in the address column where the enumerator puts additions like pub names, alley names etc under the main street name. Not quite sure where Upper West street is these days but I think it was near Pottergate which five minutes walk from Westwick Street. If you can read the Yard name ( Norwich yards were famous -or infamous-you can google Plunketts Norwich and maybe find images or details of the yard they lived in) > > Thank you Rosie for your suggestions. Do you think the writing I am struggling with might be the name of a yard? I have been googling away and am no further ahead. Of course I have been side tracked in reading about life in these yards – something very foreign to me. > One place said that many of the yards in Norwich had unusual names. > Wendy > in New Zealand > > > > ------------------------------- > To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to [email protected] with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message

    3. I would say its quite a valid suggestion, I had not thought of it but it is certainly possible I have spent some time checking the earlier census, the Norwich Yard names and maps, nothing came close I can quite see the bleary eyed and tired enumerator taking his eye off the ball and instead of writing in the yard name as he has on other pages, he wrote what may have been the occupation the householder put down, before the enumerator wrote Show Card Writer which is the proper name for a ticket writer The first word looks like ticket, the second the first letter I thought was a K for some time but I can see it being a poorly written W It may be in the wrong place on the form, but mistakes happen, the enumerator was poorly paid and had little time to do all he had to do, they were also fined some of their fee if the returns were late making urgency paramount Anyone who has done transcribing will know just how easy it is to make mistakes Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) On 28/07/2014 17:58, xpn11 via wrote: > I dont think so because it is written in the address column where > the enumerator puts additions like pub names, alley names etc under > the main street name. 3. Well humble pie here Nivard and Ros. reading glasses and full magnification and a check on the yard names on the description on the 1861 and the 1881 and I conclude that it is likely to be ticket writer. I am also thinking that he meant Upper Westwick Street too rather than Upper West , looking at the streets in St Margaret's but I am happy to be put right on that! Rosie PS Have you seen how many people were living in Queen of Hungary Yard on the 1881? My son lived in Betts Court off Cross lane for a few years-one can only imagine what they would have been like with no modern sanitation or water supply and packed with shoe workers and weavers etc. Of course those which survived are very nice now.
