Does anyone know when witness names to marriages were first recorded in parish records in Norfolk? Space was included for witness names in the printed registers produced to support Hardwicke's Marriage Act of 1753, introduced 25 March 1754. Among other things, the act required the signing of the marriage entry by the minister, the couple, and two witnesses. It should have been 1754, when new-style marriage registers were introduced. However, just as in 1837 when another set of new registers were introduced, sone churches may have continued using the old registers for a while. An example of the 1754 new-style register. https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-266-12343-102773-26?cc=1416598&wc=MMVP-SWP:2094524777 Pam On 01/03/2014 01:45, Karen Hodges wrote: > Does anyone know when witness names to marriages were first recorded > in parish records in Norfolk? > > Karen > >
