Four Silletts (various spellings) appear in the list of Freemen of Norwich. The same four are on a list of Burgesses of Yarmouth. I have wills for two of these (1435 and 1451) and both contain “gratis” in the headings, presumably referring to their Freeman status. I am trying to speculate as to why Norwich Freemen seem automatically to be awarded the status of Burgess in Yarmouth, or vice versa. Is there a medieval expert out there who could comment.
