Hello: A "Samuel Rooks" was christened 23 Jan 1763 in St. George Colegate parish, Norwich. He may be my g-g-g-grandfather. His parents were Nicolas and Bridget Rooks (maiden name unknown). Has anyone with ancestry in Norwich come across these names? If this is "my" Samuel, he moved to London prior to age 33. Was there a lot of emigration from Norwich to London in the last half of the 18th century? Thanks for any help you can give. Frank Rooks
Hi, Nicholas and Bridget had two earlier children bapt in St Clement Norwich , 1759 and 1761 and a further Bridget in 1765 at St Geo Colegate. Nicholas Rooks of St Edmund Norwich married Bridget Towler of this parish in St Geo Colegate in Feb 1759. John Towler and Daniel Clarke were the witnesses. As well there is in NROCAT a wonderful Coroner`s Inquest. Nicholas Rooks, 17, on 3rd April 1784 , All Saints. " Found dead in the passage under the walls leading from Brazen Doors to Bear ( Ber) Street Gates . Verdict Hand of God ." NRO also h as a will of Nicholas Rooks, of Norwich, 1774. However there is according to Ancestry at least one other Samuel Rooks bapt in Norwich , son of Samuel in 1770 . life is hard . soften it with a cat \\\=^..^=/// ----- Original Message ----- From: "Frank Rooks" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Tuesday, March 04, 2014 10:39 PM Subject: [NFK] Surname ROOKS in Norfolk > > Hello: > A "Samuel Rooks" was christened 23 Jan 1763 in St. George Colegate > parish, > Norwich. > > He may be my g-g-g-grandfather. Thank you for this. I have obtained from the NRO the names of the heirs in the will of Nicholas Rooks. I had hoped that the son Samuel (my g-g-g-grandfather?) would be among them and would show his address as London, which would greatly increase the probability thaat he is "my" Samuel. Unfortunately, he was not named in the will. I did know about Samuel's siblings.
