I think I know the book you mean Penny, and I've been racking my brains for the title. The closest I can come up with is The International Genealogical Directory. (Not to be confused with the IGI when you're googling! :) If it is the same one, then it was originally printed in the early 1900s. This is the second edition. http://archive.org/stream/internationalgen00convuoft/internationalgen00convuoft_djvu.txt Though I have to say that I'm not 100% sure, as I also have 'Big Red' somewhere in the mix, but that might have been the nickname of the book. :( I have to say that I doubt whether in these days of 'instant' communicaton that it's still being printed.
