Your wisdom please on this . Last time I looked the PRs for Gayton Grimston and Gayton Thorpe were not available on Family Search but are available at the record office. Does anyone know why these parishes are not on FS or if they are on the site but there is an error in how they are indexed? Second question is, I see the website The Geneaologist has transcripts of parts of some of these records for sale, added July 2015. Does anyone have experience of the quality of their work? TIA Rosie.
I do wish all these sites would identify the source of their records, and whether they are transcripts (and if so who created the transcript), or the original record. What The Genealogist does tell you is a range of dates and that these are marriages only. If you compare that with the list on GENUKI for Phillimore at http://www.origins.org.uk/genuki/NFK/norfolk/church/phillimore.shtml where they are the same, leads me to the suspicion that these are just the contents of the published Phillimore marriages for Norfolk, which are available from many other sources. If so the Phillimore marriages are only an abbreviated transcript, and do not for example list witnesses. Note that at least 3 volumes of Phillimore marriages are available online (see the above webpage), although obviously they may not have indexes as a result. There may be more since this page was last updated so it is worth an online search. Both parishes appear in Boyds marriage index from the Society of genealogists (up to 1837), so you can search this either directly at the Society of Genealogists website (if a member) or on Findmypast. They also should appear on the Norfolk Marriages CD (1801 - 1837) from NFHS. For completeness, neither parish is on NORs. As regards Family Search, these are in my understanding just the Norfolk microfilms that LDS created on behalf of the Norfolk Record Office, and as such they have not performed all that work, nor any of the recent work. Further constraints exist in that permission may not have been granted by the parish incumbent at the time for LDS to do this work. So the fact that the Norfolk Record Office may list a microfilm on their list of parish records, does not mean that the LDS has it. To a certain extent you can audit this yourself: - NROCAT will tell you whether NRO have the registers and whether they have been microfilmed (and give you the NRO call numbers). - on Family Search if you Search Catalog (rather than Records) you can find out what is in the LDS library, and the entries will conveniently cross reference the NRO call numbers. - as I say, any microfilms (for Norfolk) so listed should be on the Family Search website and if they are not, then the LDS may be able to do something about it. Further the NRO list identifies that Grimston incumbents have not given permission for the Microfilm to be available beyond 1712. I have looked at Gayton Thorpe registers in the past. It was a long time ago. From the NRO list you will see there are large gaps - I think partly that might be because some of the records appear in, or with, the East Walton registers, but someone else will need to confirm, or correct me on this, because it is so long ago I cannot remember. The NROCAT record is a bit confusing on this. Note that Freereg does have entries for both these parishes but you need to check the range of dates covered (if you have not done so already) - you have not specified the dates you are interested in. regards Keith Drage Swindon UK On 18/12/2015 13:53, xpn11 via wrote: > Your wisdom please on this .
