I have a 2xGGreat Grandfather, born 1796, lived in Kings Lynn and migrated to New Zealand via Australia 1836 -1840. Evidence, by way of letters he wrote to Colonial Officials in Australia and New Zealand, is that he had received a sound education. My question is "where"? Family lore had it that it was at a nautical college in Glasgow but I can find no evidence of this - even the existence of a nautical college. Family circumstances would also seem to rule this out.
