I would just like to say a big thank you to everyone who has replied to my request for advice. It was a complicated question and some of you are taking the trouble to look up information I already have. So as not to cause any further confusion, I will tell you what I already know. If anyone can fill in the gaps I would really appreciate it. Starting with my direct ancestors - Joseph Spink and Sarah Williamson who were married on 5 Feb 1823 in Aylsham. Before they married, Sarah had at least three illegitimate children. John , Baptised on 12 Apr 1819 - Mother's name, Sarah Wilmerson. Joseph, Baptised on 3 Dec 1820 - Mother's name, Sarah Wilderson. Anne, Baptised on 15 Sep 1822 - Mother's name Sarah Williamson. On 24 April 1842 Anne, Now calling herself Ann Spink Williamson marries Robert Spink whose family came from Burgh which is just up the road. Strangely enough, the Marriage Certificate does not show Anne's Father, the space is left blank. As a minor, she would need her parents permission to marry, so that is another mystery. Robert and Ann now go on to have four children who are listed on the 1851 census. I cannot find Baptism records for the first two, Sarah Ann aged 10 and Charlotte aged 6. Now we get to the real confusion. Elizabeth, age 4. There is a corresponding BMD Birth record in 1847 and an Aylsham Baptism record for 7 Feb 1847, Father Robert Spink, although the Mother is shown as "Sarah". This would match the age given in the 1851 census. The last child is Hannah, age 2. Again, there is a BMD Birth record in 1849 and a Baptism record for 29 April 1849, Parents, Robert and "Ann" Spink. Above it there is a Baptism record for Elizabeth Spink, same date, same parents. There is also a BMD Birth record for Elizabeth Spink in 1849. Under Elizabeth's name in the 1849 Baptism record is the date 7 Feb 1847. So the question is, are we dealing with 2 Elizabeths, born to different parents, or is it the same Elizabeth who somehow seems to have been registered and Baptised twice with the Mother's name being incorrectly entered in the first record? If it is a different Elizabeth, why is the Baptism date of the first Elizabeth written into the record of the second? If it is the same Elizabeth, why was she Baptised and registered a second time? I think I have a headache!!!
