    3. When we think of Great Yarmouth, we tend to think of the vast parish church of St Nicholas, the town's parish church through the medieval period. However, bear in mind that by the 1860s ASt Nicholas had been carved up, and there were several parishes in Great Yarmouth. As well as the familiar, medieval St Nicholas there were the parishes of St Peter, St George, St John, St James (though still without a church building) and St Mary Southtown - several of them had larger populations than the mother parish of St Nicholas, and St Peter and St Mary Southtown in particular served the areas of town where the fishermen lived.
