    3. Hello Listers, Updating names:- DOUGHTY SAILER CHILVERS GATHERCOLE GRIFFIN SEEKING BURCHAM The above families hail from Walpole St Peter, Walpole St Andrews, Towngreen Wymondham, Terrington St Clements. James DOUGHTY Married Ann STAILER in 23rd Nov 1785 of the parish of Terrington St Clement, Witnesses were Bona EASTER and John OCKLEY Their son:- Robert DOUGHTY Married Alice GATHERCOLE on 14th May 1807 in the parish of Terrington St Clement by Vicar Ambrose Goode. Witnesses were Hannah READER and William READER. They had six known children. Their youngest son:- Robert Nicholas DOUGHTY Born circa 1819 - baptised 19th Dec 1819 at Walpole St Peter by John Nelson. Robert first married ???? Details of Robert's first marriage cannot be found, as the parish registers of Walpole St Peter were stolen with the plate in the 1960s. The stolen chest was presumed to contain silver and when the thieves found that it was only registers, they threw it in the Rive Nene. Widow Robert Nicholas DOUGHTY 26 married Elizabeth BURCHAM 17 on 25th December 1846 at Wymondham, Norfolk by John Nelson. Elizabeth BURCHAM was born 1829 in Wymondham, Norfolk she was the daughter of John and Elizabeth Burcham, Inn keeper of The Dove and Two Brewers Pubs and he was also a butcher in Wymondham. The Burcham family originated in Suffolk in Lowersoft and names such as CRISP, CHAMBERLAIN and CONE are mentioned in this branch of the family. Robert Nicholas and Elizabeth DOUGHTY (nee BURCHAM) had 10 children between 1849 and 1872. They had only one daughter Elizabeth. The children were born in Ryburgh and Towngreen Wymondham Norfolk, Tottenham Middlesex, Plumstead Kent, Farlington Hampshire, Purbrook and Portsea Hampshire. The family at last settled in Hampshrie after Robert had been a Supervisor on the laying of the sewer line through England and Robert and his wife Elizabeth then ran "The George Public House" at 84 Queen Street, Portsea, using Elizabeth's vast experience working in her father John's pub back in Wymondham. The George is very historical pub in Portsea. Most of the clientele at the Pub were seafarers, and the sons of the DOUGHTY family would listen to the many stories of lands beyond the seas, told in the bar over a few beers. The stories so intrigued the boys, especially the stories of the gold being found Down Under, that five of them, between the years of 1874 and 1888, immigrated to Australia. One of the those boys was Robert John DOUGHTY, who married his first cousin, Hannah DOUGHTY in Portsea and not long after their marriage sailed to Australia in 1874 to join Hannah's eldest brother John and his wife Rebecca (nee Griffin), who had settled on the Southern Tablelands of New South Wales in a town called Tumbarumba. It is believed that Robert Nicholas DOUGHTY, may have had sons from his first marriage before he married Elizabeth BURCHAM and they also immigrated, however the story goes that they settled in the US. However, we have never been able to find these sons, or who Robert's first wife was. Hope you all had a wonferful Christmas. Cheers Janice Belrose - Sydney
