Hi, although it doesn`t get you to the birth place of James Parkes, he and Winifred Gill were married at Cockley Cley in Jan 1809 . The 1841 census is clear and the James and Winifred are clearly N and Y , so where James came from is going to be difficult to find. I have tried the BMD registers of Non conformists which includes Catholic records and can find nothing for a James Parkes b c 1754. I wonder if they were part of the Bedingfeld estate workers as they have the Chapel cottage which may be the lodge by the side gate close by the chapel ? I wonder if the NRO has any papers for the Oxbrough extate ? life is hard . soften it with a cat \\\=^..^=/// ----- Original Message ----- From: "Kay Wright" <mktadhg@net.bluemoon.net> To: "Norfolk rootsweb" <NORFOLK@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, December 29, 2011 10:45 PM Subject: [NFK] Surnames - BUTTERS, GILL, PARKES > James PARKES & wife Winefrid GILL PARKES were residing in > Oxborough1809-1859 when Winefrid died. > Their son, Joseph, married Louisa BUTTER, living in Goldestone. > > Winefrid GILL was born in NFK, James was not. > Brick wall--where was he born??? > > ------------------------------- > To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to > NORFOLK-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the > quotes in the subject and the body of the message >
There is a baptism on free reg for a John Parker in 1756 at Barton Bendish just across the fields from Oxborough and one at Downham Market a bit later which might be worth a look at the original to see if it has been mis transcribed or mis written for John Parkes in the original. I assume you have seen the entry on free reg for a marriage of a John Warmes to Ann Parkes 1801 at Oxborough Church and a widow Parkes marrying at Swaffham in 1806 which might give some encouragement for the Parkes being in the area if thin on the ground. As Elizabeth pointed out if they were in the Chapel cottage they may well be employees , might be worth having a look to see where the Bedinngfields had interests- other land and houses, a London home for instance in case John was a member of staff relocated.
