Welcome, Your request jogged my boyhood memory: When we lived at Tunstead in Norfolk a certain Miss Nicholl was in charge of what I remember as an orphanage in the Vicarage near the church. She had a deep interest in local history and was going to write a book. She did much research. Later, while on holiday from Wymondham College and after she had left the Vicarage, I went to see her in her bungalow somewhere on the road to Wroxham. The purpose of the visit was to prepare a talk to the school history society (run by Mr Carter..of the Howard Carter family IIRC)about the "History of my Village". Miss Nicholl was plucking turkeys as I recall and I was roped in to help. Beisdes telling me that there used to be two old men in the village who remembered the tunnel that ran from the church being opened she also mentioned that Hugh Walpole had connections with the village. I have never confirmed this but have just found Walpoles at: http://www.genealogy.doun.org/transcriptions/surnames.php?doc_type=400&surname=WALPOLE. some of these are in the Tunstead and Happing district, notably Dilham. and Barton Turf.... Hugh Walpole was born in New Zealand... perhaps his family did come from Tunstead. Just a thought.
