I'm not at all sure about the destitute Consul to Mauritius - four years later his son was describing him as 'Consul USA', and in 1891 his wife states that she is a widow - though I've no way of knowing whether she was sure of that. However, I'll keep your newspaper reports on file in case a link does crop up.
