Hello All, This is my first post to this list. I am Geoff Roosen from Melbourne, Australia. On my mother's side - my gr-grandmother was Matilda Maud Crask, baptised in Overstrand and I am trying to get more definition into this side of the family. I believe that the family was always Church of England. 1. From the IGI I have John Crask m. Susannah Neve in Jan 1807 in Northrepps. Between 1807 & 1826, they had (at least) 11 children, 3 of whom emigrated to Australia and I have found a lot of info about them. My questions are..... - What would have been the name of the church that John & Susannah married in and these 11 were baptised in ? - does the building from this period still exist ? 2. One of John and Susannah's children, James William Crask m. Ann Susannah Emery. They had (at least) 8 children all baptised in Overstrand. Again..... - What would have been the name of the church that these 8 were baptised in ? - does the building from this period still exist ? My Crasks, at least back to John bap 1769 have no "e" but I can see that Craske is also common in the area. There are probably cross-links that I don't yet understand. I would be very pleased to hear from any Lister who has an interest in the Crask(e) familes. Thanks Geoff
Geoff, Have you looked at www.GenUKI.org.uk . It has a parish church database. Hi Geoff, Welcome to the list. Try Simon's excellent Norfolk churches site for pictures and information. http://www.norfolkchurches.co.uk/mainpage.htm With Overstrand I would think you will need Overstrand, and not Overstrand Methodist. With regard to the different spellings of Crask and Craske, spelling wasn't standardised until the end of the 1800s, and prior to that the vicar could spell a name one way on Monday and spell it differently on Tuesday, so I would be very much inclined to record all instances of the name that you find at the moment (especially as Crask is not a common name in the UK, though it may be prolific in certain areas). Some of the parish registers for Overstand and North Repps are online at https://www.familysearch.org/search/image/show#uri=https%3A//api.familysearch.org/records/collection/1416598/waypoints Pam On 13/09/2011 00:21, Geoff Roosen wrote: > Hello All, > > This is my first post to this list. Do not be misled by the final "e". Certainly in Sheringham there are instances where it comes and goes even within the lifetime of the same person. Seems to depend on the whim of the officiating minister. Do remember that it is relatively recently that there has been a right and a wrong way of spelling things. Also do not rely on the IGI for this area. It's coverage for this area is relatively sparse and you will miss people if you rely only on IGI entries. I do have a tree drawn up by someone I corresponded with at least 15 years ago (and the tree is dated 1986) that shows the parents of John CRASK who married Susannah NEVE was born/baptised 31 DEC 1780, and was the son of Edmund CRASK (born / baptised 23 JAN 1748 in Sheringham) who married Mary Ann GREGORY (baptised 23 MAY 1756 in Overstrand) on 28 MAY 1776 in Cromer. Its all very conjectural before that. I've not verified any part of this tree because I was looking at a different twig (who married into my own ancestors). If the above is true, then this is the baptism entry from the Sheringham register: Edmund ye son of Nathaniel and Elizabeth CRASK; baptized Jan: ye 23: 1748 I can help you with more Sheringham entries for this name from the parish registers, if you manage to confirm yourself back to here. regards Keith Swindon UK > -----Original Message----- > From: norfolk-bounces@rootsweb.com > [mailto:norfolk-bounces@rootsweb.com]On Behalf Of Geoff Roosen > Sent: 13 September 2011 00:21 > To: NORFOLK@rootsweb.com > Subject: [NFK] CRASK Family - Northrepps & Overstrand > > > Hello All, > > This is my first post to this list.
