    3. Diane Have you found out where he was before enlisting There's full coverage of Bradwell, Belton and Burgh Castle for 1871 on FreeCen and he doesn't appear there. Haven't tried Gorleston and G Yarmouth. If he enlisted in G Yarmouth he was likely in the immediate area. 3. Hi Helen, your frustration is understandable. The instructions in the messages don't help when at the top of the message it says to use the word 'help' and at the bottom of the message says to use the word 'unsubscribe'. However I have just attempted it on your behalf for you directly via the admin web page 'unsubscribe' option... http://lists2.rootsweb.ancestry.com/mailman/options/norfolk .... and entered the email address you supplied. You should receive one further email with a link to confirm that you indeed want to subscribe (as a precaution to prevent malicious or accidental unsubscribing). Click the link you receive to acknowledge and that should be it. Sorry for your loss. * *Stephen* *NZ* * On 7/11/2016 4:48 AM, norfolk-request@rootsweb.com wrote: > Send NORFOLK mailing list submissions to > norfolk@rootsweb.com > > To subscribe or unsubscribe via the World Wide Web, visit > http://lists2.rootsweb.ancestry.com/mailman/listinfo/norfolk > or, via email, send a message with subject or body 'help' to > norfolk-request@rootsweb.com > > You can reach the person managing the list at > norfolk-owner@rootsweb.com > > When replying, please edit your Subject line so it is more specific > than "Re: Contents of NORFOLK digest..." > > > Today's Topics: > > 1. Donna Genealogically speaking... “Never stop looking for what’s not there.” ________________________________ From: Diane Johansen <lizzy.johansen@btinternet.com> To: norfolk@rootsweb.com Sent: Saturday, November 5, 2016 2:51 PM Subject: [NFK] CLARKE, Richard born Bradwell (now Norfolk) 1846 It's many years since I started researching my CLARKE family who had Burgh Castle, Bradwell and Belton links and as these places are now in Norfolk I thought I would ask for some help here on this List. Richard CLARKE was born in Bradwell (then Suffolk) in 1846. He had 3 brothers, one of whom was my great-grandfather. As their mother Emma died when they were young, the boys were not brought up together. Richard recently came to mind and I wondered whether someone could give me some ideas to try to find out what happened to him. He enlisted on 28 February 1878 at the Brigade Depot, Great Yarmouth, joining the 31st Brigade of Infantry (East Norfolk) and his service number was 1633. He said he was a labourer born Bradwell and that he was 24 years old. In fact he was 32. He was unmarried and signed up for 12 years. 6 in the Army service and 6 in First Class Reserve. In 1881, just 3 years later, Richard, as Private R CLARKE, 2/9th Foot Regiment, was to be found convalescing at Netley Military Hospital near Southampton. On 26th July 1881 he was discharged as an invalid, permanently incapacitated with General Debility and Nervous Tremors as a result of service in the army and repeated attacks of Malaria during field service in Afghanistan. He also contracted the disease in Nowshera and Umballa. I have found him on the 1881 Census on board HMS Crocodile however after this time I lose track of him and his very common name prevents me from tracing him, no matter how many variations of search terms I have made. If Richard were pensioned out of the Army due to illness, is it likely he would have received a pension and would I be able to find any more on him? If not, then I would nonetheless like to recognise his service this Remembrance Sunday. Bill Higgins (the OP) appears to have created an online tree that includes these people on the WikiTree website. For non-users, the Google cache (at least from my location) lets one past the login screen to see some of Bill's data there, relating to Thomas Stewart's mother Sarah Parker, which confirm that he already considers the 1881 census entry to be a valid match: http://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache:OixLus56uw0J:http://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Parker-8257%2BRushbeds+Notts&hl=en&gbv=2&ct=clnk Rol

    3. 1) What are you looking for, a birth record or a baptism record? If you want the civil registration birth record, then I am afraid you will need to purchase it from the GRO. If you want a baptism record, then most of the Nottinghamshire stuff is not available electronically - there is a county wide index available by the local FHS, which could also be accessed in Nottingham libraries and the County Record Office, and all the registers are available on fiche up until at least 1900. I am in Nottingham this weekend, but cannot guarantee time for a lookup, but it might happen. 2) More commonly spelt "Oldcotes" on current maps or "Oldcoates". It appears to be split between the parishes of Blyth and Harworth - do you know which, or is it non-conformist. 3) Nottinghamshire is not Norfolk. 2. Yesterday Stephen asked about a marriage certificate. I thought it was Farrells Yard but it was in fact Farnells Yard. http://www.origins.org.uk/genuki/NFK/places/n/norwich/yards.shtml Anyone curious about a Norwich residence in a Yard should Google Norwich Yards and they will find Genuki's page Yard's and Courts of Old Norwich which gives a list ( but does not claim to be comprehensive) and there are also webpages for Plunkett's photographs of some yards and courts still standing in the 1930s.
