    3. Hi Elizabeth, I'm researching my husband's family history and he has ENGLANDs in his tree. His great grandmother is Sarah ENGLAND born in Norwich in 1893 who married Frederick CUSHING. Happy to contact you off list to discuss further. RegardsSerena Woodcock,Norwich, UK From: Elizabeth Lee Pugh <elp@northwestel.net> To: norfolk@rootsweb.com Sent: Wednesday, 9 November 2016, 15:48 Subject: [NFK] Family name ENGLAND Now the list seems to be working again I am re-posting my interest in the ENGLAND family which I can trace back to George ENGLAND who married Barbara STOREY in Docking in 1636 and one of their children, Robert - born 1639, was my 8x ggfather. I have no idea where George ENGLAND was born but it could have been in Gresham in 1599 or there are two possibilities born in Great Yarmouth in the early 1600s.  Of course I realize there could be absolutely no connection. But have wondered if maybe the families in Great Yarmouth were immigrants from Scandanavia and maybe were INGLUNDs or something similar.  It's amazing how one's imagination can run riot isn't it? An ENGLAND family ended up in Holkham a few years later but I cannot positively identify them as part of my line although they used all the same given names....  Is anyone connected to this family? And what may be another branch ended up in the Tattersett area - and again I cannot find the definite link to "my" family.  A Catherine SHARPE (d/o Catherine ENGLAND b 1745) married Steed GIRDLESTONE (from Wisbech - which is where I was born and raised) and it was Lisa's request for GIRDLESTONE contacts that renewed interest/reminded me of my possible connection to that family. Catherine ENGLAND (from Tattersett) married Samuel SHARPE (from Holme)  in North Wootton in 1773 which is where my definite line were living and I think there has to have been a family connection, and their children were born in Docking. Write-up that includes a portrait in oils (link may require double-clicking to reach the page): http://www.exploringsurreyspast.org.uk/themes/subjects/living/6-2/ Book ref. confirming all his forenames: http://www.worldcat.org/title/charterhouse-register-1872-1910/oclc/595089080 No doubt there is a fair amount about him available elsewhere online. 3. Hello Lisa in Idaho, I have a couple of GIRDLESTONE in my family as follows: John GIRDLESTONE whose name is mentioned on the marriage between his daughter, Mary Ann to Joshua CULLING. John and his wife and family appear in the 1851 Census at Union Spot North St, Hamlet of Heigham, Norwich, Norfolk - the CULLINGs are living with them. Mary Ann married Joshua CULLING on 26 Jan, 1840 - I have their 10 children, not all by Mary Ann as she died in Apr, 1885 registered death at Norwich, Norfolk, England. Joshua had children from a previous marriage. I think Joshua CULLING is the one of my lot who emmigrated to the US and he died on 23 Feb, 1876 in Chicago. He had deserted his family as noted on the 1851 Census. I haven't followed the GIRDLESTONE family further back than John, father of Mary Ann. Hope the above is of interest. 3. There were about four Girdlestones who moved there - two men were actually deported in the 1850s from Great Snoring. They stayed there following 15 year sentences, had huge families. Another family moved there by the name of Girdlestone-Priest in the 19th century. Shipwrecked but managed to make it. Another family moved there in the 1960s. Those are four that I know of. It's a few years ago we first corresponded about this part of Norfolk, ex-Suffolk, isn't it! You are right, Richard is quite elusive and I have never tracked him down on the 1871 UK census, despite using a multitude of search terms. I never managed to find his older brother, William Cobb Clarke (born 1844 Bradwell) in 1871 either, however, after many years of research I eventually tracked him down to Australia where, in 1877, he was working as a cattle dealer in the outback, heading the horsemen leading the cattle down to the markets in Adelaide. So perhaps the two older brothers initially travelled to Australia together but Richard came back home before enlisting in the army. In 1861 Richard was working as a groom for his great aunt and uncle, William and Ann SHEPHARD, in Gorleston, so we could assume he knew about horses. As I am writing this I am beginning to wonder whether Richard's health, evaluated by the army in 1881 as "permanently incapacitated," eventually improved and he went back out to Australia. Thanks to everyone for your kind interest. 1. [NFK] CLARKE, Richard born Bradwell (now Norfolk) 1846
    2. Hi, he is in the Military Campaign Medal and Award Rolls 1793-1949 for Afghanistan 1878-1880 . which shows no 1633 Clarke , R , Clasp Kabul . discharged . I am certain there will be some hospital records for Netley but under what class of record I don`t know. I see there is a facebook page for the Netley hospital heritage group ........https://www.facebook.com/pages/RVCP-Netley-Heritage-Group/747572011986277 -----Original Message----- From: Diane Johansen Sent: Saturday, November 5, 2016 6:51 PM To: norfolk@rootsweb.com Subject: [NFK] CLARKE, Richard born Bradwell (now Norfolk) 1846 It's many years since I started researching my CLARKE family who had Burgh Castle, Bradwell and Belton links and as these places are now in Norfolk I thought I would ask for some help here on this List. Richard CLARKE was born in Bradwell (then Suffolk) in 1846. He had 3 brothers, one of whom was my great-grandfather. As their mother Emma died when they were young, the boys were not brought up together. Richard recently came to mind and I wondered whether someone could give me some ideas to try to find out what happened to him. He enlisted on 28 February 1878 at the Brigade Depot, Great Yarmouth, joining the 31st Brigade of Infantry (East Norfolk) and his service number was 1633. He said he was a labourer born Bradwell and that he was 24 years old. In fact he was 32. He was unmarried and signed up for 12 years. 6 in the Army service and 6 in First Class Reserve. In 1881, just 3 years later, Richard, as Private R CLARKE, 2/9th Foot Regiment, was to be found convalescing at Netley Military Hospital near Southampton. On 26th July 1881 he was discharged as an invalid, permanently incapacitated with General Debility and Nervous Tremors as a result of service in the army and repeated attacks of Malaria during field service in Afghanistan. He also contracted the disease in Nowshera and Umballa. I have found him on the 1881 Census on board HMS Crocodile however after this time I lose track of him and his very common name prevents me from tracing him, no matter how many variations of search terms I have made. If Richard were pensioned out of the Army due to illness, is it likely he would have received a pension and would I be able to find any more on him? If not, then I would nonetheless like to recognise his service this Remembrance Sunday.
