I would think that in all cases you would need to obtain a copy of the death certificate for the actual date of death. You might be able to find a burial record which would narrow down the date. Or alternatively either a notice or an obituary in the local paper. Most burials would have been in one of the city cemeteries but there may have been a church service beforehand which might be recorded. Other info re burials in the city cemeteries. https://www.norwich.gov.uk/info/20203/cemeteries_and_crematorium/1407/historic_records If they left a will then the death date might be found in the Probate Index. https://probatesearch.service.gov.uk/#calendar For wills 1858-1996 the index is restricted to surname, and then you have to scroll through the pages to find Jack, Thomas, William, etc. From 1997 you can search using a forename as well. For birth dates, check the 1939 Register on FindMyPast. For anyone who died before 1939 then you could check baptism records to see if a birth date is recorded. If not, then again you will have to obtain a birth certificate. For marriages, check the parish records online at FamilySearch. https://familysearch.org/search/image/index#uri=https://familysearch.org/recapi/sord/collection/1416598/waypoints Some tips in general. First of all check you have the correct years for birth/marriage/death by using the GRO Index (for births to 1915 and deaths to 1957 only) online at http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/ or (should be complete for the years you're looking at) at FreeBMD. http://www.freebmd.org.uk/cgi/search.pl For baptism and marriage registers, check the parish is person/the family is living in on census records (in the year nearest to the census year) and start by looking in that parish, then check adjacent ones.. Map of Norwich parishes http://web.archive.org/web/20110825033628/www.norfolkfhs.org.uk/norfolk/parishes/norwich/norwmap.htm A marriage which took place in a register office will not be in the parish registers, not will any event which took place in a non-conformist place of worship. What we call parish registers are usually Church of England registers. To order BMD certificates use the GRO address I gave earlier. Any other site (however official-looking it is) has to order their certificates through the GRO (or a local registrar's office) and will charge you an arm and a leg for doing so. FindMyPast also has some Norfolk newspapers on its site. To the best of my knowledge they will be the same ones as are found at the British Newspaper Archive. http://www.britishnewspaperarchive.co.uk/ Pam On 8 January 2017 at 00:51, <higginsw@bell.net> wrote: > Is there any kind soul living in Norwich that can help me. The best way is to look them up and order the certificates. Use either FreeBMD or the GRO index which has this entry for one of them. I'm sure there are other entries. Here's one taken from the GRO index. Name: BOWLES, MARTHA AGNES Mother's Maiden Surname: BALDRY GRO Reference: 1864 M Quarter in DEPWADE Volume 04B Page 258 If you're new to this and don't know how to look these up, let me know and I can help off list. It would help if you supplied more detail to enable us to see the record ourselves (before the end of tomorrow when free access ends, and I have to go into local library to get free access). I would note that quite a lot of discharges are stamped 'transferred to "Z" reserve', but on those there does not seem to be any subsequent updating of service information. As for length of service, it depends when he joined up. Many wartime enlistments were for duration of war, and they were then demobilised in 1919, with the above tranfer to reserve if they were still fit for active duty. Hi Eliz Not wishing to stir the pot but it could be worse than that The Army often recorded names as just forename, and many with incorrect spelling or variation of it Such as Frederick CLARK (no E) So there may be many more possibles than the ten Hopefully William has more detail to help us help him Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) On 12-Nov-16 3:11 PM, elizgh@btinternet.com wrote: > Hi William , its not quite as easy as > that .....there are 10 Frederick R Clarke listed , and without knowing > his regiment /unit or if he survived or not , he could be any of > them Do you have anything further which might help ?
Hi David & all Re Fold3 and Ancestry who own the site There have been some recent additions by Ancestry which are index only, despite their being UK records, to gain access you have to subscribe to Fold3 (up to a few weeks ago a completely American record site) at the huge cost of an *extra* £200 over and above Ancestrys subscription All these recent additions are UK, yet a UK or even Worldwide subscription doesn't cover access to them, only the index This latest move by Ancestry is underhand to say the least and I am unsure as yet whether its legal given the wording of the Ancestry subscriptions Premium Access all our UK records Our Premium membership provides everything you need to trace your family history in the UK. Delve deep into your past with unlimited access to more than 1 billion records, *plus guaranteed access to all our new UK releases* Worldwide Access our entire archive Our Worldwide membership provides everything you need to trace your family history around the world. Scour the globe with unlimited access to our entire library of more than 16 billion records, *plus guaranteed access to all our new releases* PS it should also be noted that some of the latest data which is index only with images on Fold3 are available elsewhere, some on pay sites and some for free (Army lists for example) Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) On 12-Nov-16 3:05 PM, DavidTennant wrote: > See Caroline's URL . Hi William You should find that you can get free access to Ancestrys military records to the end of the 13th And Findmypast are also doing a free access, not sure whether its all records or just Military I had a brief look as I am used to the records but did not come up with a definite There was a man Frederick R CLARKE who served in the Norfolk regiment but he was killed in action 1916, I presume your man survived the war If you were not aware two thirds approx of the British army records were destroyed in WW2 So the chances of finding a service record is slim Added to that the recording of names and details varies by the database, for example the medal cards record the name, sometimes abbreviated, the regiment(s) and number(s) and the medal entitlement So it can be a difficult search I assume you do not have his medals, which would have his regiment and service number stamped on them Or a photo of him in uniform? I am looking for the WW1 enlistment records of my wife’s father. I do not have Find My Past, could S.K.S. who has it, take a look. Frederick Robert Clarke. Born 5 Dec. 1891, Norwich, Norfolk Parents Frederick William Clarke and Mary Ann Daines. Married 25 August, 1912 to Margaret Mounser. Most likely lived on Trafalgar Street, Lakenham, Norwich. I have just taken advantage of the Findmypast free weekend access to Military Data for some info on my father's service. I have found just one piece of data, his enlistment data into the Royal Garrison Artillery and I am curious as to some of the data revealed Some is very obvious eg:service number, date of enlistment (17 Nov 1910), where enlisted , etc and I was not too surprised to see my Mother there as he married in 1918 before discharge. This discharge date is not immediately obvious to me but I suspect in is stated as 12.3 1919 in the column headed "Transfer to or from regiment or corps and date" What surprised me was the presence of my late elder sister and brother who were born in 1919 and 1921 ( however before the birth of my next brother in 1924) respectively and their place and date of birth as well as his then current address , Corner Lane, Horsford (likely the police house as he was at that time a PC). Does this suggest that he was still in some sort of reserve? What were "standard" lengths for enlistment in the colours and reserves at that time? Unfortunately, like I understand was frequently the case, my father was reluctant to talk about his WW1 experiences. David
