Have you got a drove name as well Marjorie? There were Bartles at Pymoor/Oxlode but cant find a Fen named for them-some of the names for smaller fens seem to sort of fall out of use or change . Who was the ancestor-if we can find a name cluster we might be able to narrow down the location. Could it be nearer Fleet/Gedney ? I cant see it on the maps I have got but that means nothing! Hi Marjorie Casting around for Bartle Fen I found very little In the 1911 there is a young lady by the name of Mary DEW b1889 Bartle Fen Norfolk married 1 year to a John DEW In 1910 a marriage was registered in N Witchford showing her as Mary Ann TUCK marrying John Robert DEW Looking back I found what I think is her in 1891 a daughter of Reuben & Margaret TUCK living in Stow Bardolph, birthplace Stow Bardolph In 1901 with family in Chatteris Cambs her birthplace as Stow Norfolk Looking at an OS map of the period I cannot see a Bartle Fen , however could it be Bardolph Fen perhaps ? And likewise for your target whose name you don't give unfortunately Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) On 30/03/2014 11:41, M Cook wrote: > Can anybody tell me where Bartle Fen is or was, please? A plea to everyone - please tell us exactly where you found the words/name you're referring to. Hopefully we can then look at those words ourselves. In the meantime we're left wondering - is it a transcription? Is it your interpretation of what's written? Is the writing as clear as day? Or a bit of a scribble? Was it on a census? (Census ref, please.) In a parish register? (Which parish? Date?) Without names and context we often can't help. Or else go barking up the wrong tree. :) Over to you Marjorie. <g> Pam On 30/03/2014 11:41, M Cook wrote: > Can anybody tell me where Bartle Fen is or was, please? Can anybody tell me where Bartle Fen is or was, please? It appears as the birth place of a possible ancestor about 1840 and is probably in the Outwell, Emneth, Murrow, Sutton St Edmunds or Parson Drove area. I've tried Google maps, Goggle search and a 19th Century Ordnance Survey map. Any help would be appreciated. Marjorie Cook

Hi the simplest answer is I don`t know but Norfolk pubs must have got this information from somewhere . In fact if you find NROCAT and put King, Robert in the keyword search , it brings up 1833 NCC will register Cubitt 49 , he is a miller and farmer of Methwold . life is hard . soften it with a cat \\\=^..^=/// ----- Original Message ----- From: "Wendy Inskeep" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Friday, March 28, 2014 8:41 PM Subject: [NFK] George and Rebecca GREEN now Robert KING > Thank you for the help and interest I have received for my query on George > and Rebecca GREEN. >From the Wells St. Nicholas register of baptisms 1827-1833 page 83. “Private Baptism at the parents’ houses had been, with a few exceptions, administered by Mr. V. Hill. As it is contrary to the Rubrick, except in cases of illness, I announced in my first Sermon my determination to break thro’ the custom, & my expectation that the children should be brought to the Font; which has been almost invariably complied with. J.R.H.” <J.R. Hopper – Curate> I have come across similar notes in other Norfolk registers. Abuse of the privilege (normally reserved for those infants with a poor chance of survival) appears to have been widespread. Best regards to all ................ Thank you for the help and interest I have received for my query on George and Rebecca GREEN. Sorry I have taken so long to thank you but I have got sidetracked onto the KING family thanks to Elizabeth's reply! > George Green and Rebecca Lambert were married in her parish by licence on > December 28 1812 at St Nicholas Church, Feltwell where they both signed > their names. George was a > millwright at first and then he eventually became the proprietor of the > "Cock" in Methwold (1830-31) They gave their children the usual names -Daniel (Rebecca's father's name) George,( his father ) William, Elizabeth Lambert, ( Rebecca's mother ) Anne and Martha Matilda. This will interested me greatly Elizabeth as I had not seen it before. " In his will of 1833 Robert King bequeathed the Cock Inn , a corn mill and other properties to his son in law John Batterbee". . so perhaps the Greens never owned it but simply tenanted it. Quite possible they were running it for Robert KING as Rebecca's mother was Elizabeth KING. Is this will available online?
Four Silletts (various spellings) appear in the list of Freemen of Norwich. The same four are on a list of Burgesses of Yarmouth. I have wills for two of these (1435 and 1451) and both contain “gratis” in the headings, presumably referring to their Freeman status. I am trying to speculate as to why Norwich Freemen seem automatically to be awarded the status of Burgess in Yarmouth, or vice versa. Is there a medieval expert out there who could comment. Hi, just another Downham Boy ....Harry Parsons Watson , GRANDSON of Mrs Watson of Lynn Road. I can find him on the 1911 on FMP and he is indeed living as an 11 yr old with George and Sarah Watson, builder, in Church Road with various older single children of George and Sarah`s..........missing are Nelly and Beatrice . both in the 1901 census with the family , and 16 month old Harry , who is described as son ..........but can only surely be grandson as Sarah has to be past childbearing at 50.......so is he the son of Beatrice which seems most likely ? And is he names Parsons after his natural father ? the only Parsons funnily enough are the family of a Somerset born coachman who has two sons born in Downham in 1898 and 1899 but coachman Parsons is a Somerset born man .......too complicated for this late in the day !!!!! anyone with a clearer head please and thank you . life is hard . soften it with a cat \\\=^..^=///

Funny but we always called "Mare's Tails" "Cat Tail" and that was impossible to get rid of! I remember helping my Dad once and we dug and dug along one root and it went for yards and yards! Worse than digging up stinging nettles! It is such a shame that I am probably in the last generation to talk with a real Norfolk accent because it is being so watered down. Hi, this chap was killed 96 years and 3 days ago in March 1918 . I am guessing somewhere on the Ypres battlefield as he is buried at Pozieres. He was a driver in the RFA ...... FreeBMD has two , a possible born March 1/4 1899 Downham district which is perhaps pushing the age limit to the limit ......but not unknown for these very young boys joining up aged 15/16 ......or a more likely Geo Wm born in the Dec 1882 1/4 Downham district. . There is a marriage FMP of a George W Spinks in Downham district in 1918 I cannot find him in the 1891 , 1901 or 1911 census under Spinks , Spink , on Ancestry nor FMP . Can someone please find him ......I don`t mind buying his birth cert if push comes to shove but perhaps someone can spot him , he should have been somewhere on all three census .....thanks. life is hard . soften it with a cat \\\=^..^=///
I haven't heard that name for Cleavers/Goosgrass fo many years. We used to stick it to people's clothes and chant "You've got a Boy/Girl friend!". I even taught my own children that and (from timet o tiem) children in my classes) The best bit was the seeds that stuck to clothes! The were the number of kisses!! So not so boring after all. As for chickweed. Use it in salads...or for all sorts of medicines...particularly for the skin..... Interestingly alongside cleavers!
