    3. Hi Mike No age is given on the marriage register in that time frame. Though Thomas and Elizabeth died in Hull in 1880 aged 76 and 1881 respectively. Looking at early census records, I don't think Thomas knew where he was born. Perhaps he was baptised in a non-conformist register?? Officially, the age at which parental consent was not required to get married varied, but was normally taken to be 21. There again, if the man lied about his age, how was the priest supposed to know? Unless he was known. You don't say what age he gave on the marriage entry, and where he claimed to come from. -- Regards, Mike Fry Johannesburg ------------------------------- To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to NORFOLK-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message

    3. I know this may seem a strange question but what was the age that a man had to get permission to marry and would this require a licence below 21? I have a chap, Thomas Rockett, marrying at Wendling 3 Sept 1822. In the later census returns he indicates he was born c1805, making him 16-17 when marrying. This is borne out when he dies and his birth year is estimated at 1805. I cannot find his baptism anywhere and have looked at the Wendling baptisms from 1790 onwards to no avail. I can find a chap by that name in Chardstock and know from a surname atlas that there were a lot of Rocketts' from there but can find nothing to indicate he was born there. Can anyone throw any light onto this please?? Jan

    3. This sounds like the same problem we have with Elizabeth and Matthew Brothers, brother and sister from Attleborough. They disappeared from the 1881 census and haven't been seen since. We've searched shipping records, prison records, military records, parish records, but they seem to have disappeared. Given Elizabeth's propensity for having 4 children with unknown fathers we figure she just moved in with someone and took his name. Matthew, though is a real mystery. 3. Hi Rosie & Listers ! A) Sorry to disappoint you, but HMS Victory and Pembroke are both the names of major shore-bases, not actual floating ships ! Victory is Nelson's old flagship in dry-dock at Portsmouth and its name was used for the Naval Barracks as well in those days (though nowadays the Barracks are known as HMS Nelson). HMS Pembroke was the name for the Naval base at Chatham on the River Medway. HMS Drake was used in a similar way at Plymouth. Every sailor who gets drafted off a ship goes into the Naval Base Barracks, and so gets one of these names on his papers, and is then sent on draft to a new ship. B) These graves and their surroundings will be well maintained by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission, but ....... C) the rest of the cemetery is almost certainly the responsibility of the local council ? Best Wishes ! Roger. -------------------- On 23 Jul 2011, at 17:11, xpn11 wrote: > I have found the headstone/grave of Tom A Bishop in Caister on Sea > cemetery and as soon as I down load the photos I will send them on to > Marilyn. 3. I have a great uncle buried at Caister in a War Grave. I espect that he's one of those and that they are all War Graves cared for by the Commission. 3. Hi Elizabeth, Couldn't find that hospital on that site. No doubt I am doing something wrong. I understood that it had been made into residential units now but maybe I understood that wrong Many thanks I found it interesting looking at Great Yarmouth Whom would I contact to find a grave? He actually died 29th June 1918. I would have thought htey could have at least given him a soldiers grave Cheers Marilyn from Western Australia At 12:59 AM 23/07/2011, you wrote: > Hi, the Royal Naval Hospital at Gt Yarmouth is now St Nicholas >Hospital but there is on the www.great-yarmouth.co.uk website a very fine >picture of the front of the building . and if you lived closer , the dates >of the Open days for the hospital Its now a Grade 2 listed building . 3. Hi Daphne, many thanks for that info. That site is very good. I did finally get to read all Tom Arthur Bishop's navy records He was in the navy from 1889 then was discharged in 1910 (probably done his 20 year service.) He rejoined in 1914 as far as I can make out. I did find his death 29th June 1918 at Yarmouth So far I haven't been able to find him in the 1891 census or the 1911 census. He was on the "Terror" in 1901 He was born 1871 at Worcester Anyone that can help I would be most grateful Cheers Marilyn from Western Australia At 12:22 AM 23/07/2011, you wrote: >hi Marilyn. there is picture of Yarmouth Hospital on the Norfolk County >Council website.
