    1. [NFK] GILLETT and KITSON family in Norwich 1790s to 1817
    2. robert hillier
    3. I am researching Joseph GILLETT and his family. Evidence points to my Joseph GILLETT originating in Oxfordshire (at Swyncombe)about 1778 but it is possible that heĀ  married Lydia KITSON at St Pauls in Norwich on 16 March 1798 and some of their children were baptised in Norwich. If these are my people and not namesakes, the family then moved to Swyncombe where Lydia's name appears as Sidey (in transcript). There is some census information which is consistent with Norfolk/Norwich births for some of the children. Joseph was a tailor by occupation. In the Norfolk Archdeacon's Transcript of marriages for St Paul, Norwich, it gives Joseph Gillett's home parish as St Lawrence, Ipswich which rather clashes with the (limited) evidence for the Oxfordshire origins of this GILLETT line. Have any listers any interest in these GILLETTs or the KITSON family of Norwich? Is the St Pauls, Norfolk marriage register (not the Archdeacon's transcripts) accessible online for me to check the accuracy of Joseph GILLETT's home parish? I would be grateful for any pointers - such as is it likely that a tailor from Oxfordshire would move to Ipswich, then Norwich and then back to Oxfordshire around 1800? Best wishes to all listers, Robert Hillier, Poole, Dorset

    3. Look at FamilySearch.org if you haven't already. They have the images of the Norfolk Registers, AT's and BT's available online. I don't know if St Paul's Norwich is there but it is very comprehensive. 3. Thanks for this - I'd concentrated on looking through parish registers for local burials, rather than generally looking for deaths - which proves the value of these lists, where someone looks at things in a different way. I've tried, with mixed success, to match the deaths with previous census entries and can eliminate an obviously well to do farmer from Lincolnshire, some where the age is wrong and also the Sheffield widower (1861 census) who appears to have married his 'visitor' by 1871. I still have some to investigate so many thanks. It would be very sad if I eventually find that the identified water theme took her second husband, as her first was 'a fisherman brought ashore' and buried in Lowestoft. I will continue my search and following up your suggestions, but didn't want to delay my thanks. 1. [NFK] 1861 Norfolk FreeCen Project Update
    2. Bev
    3. Hi I am writing to provide an update on the 1861 census project. Two further pieces have been uploaded to the on line database and are now searchable for free on the main Freecen site at http://www.freecen.org.uk These are pieces: RG09/1226 Blofield covering the parishes of Blofield, Bradeston, Brundall, Buckenham, Burlingham St Andrew, Burlingham St Edmund, Great Plumstead, Hassingham, Hemblington, Lingwood, Little Plumstead, Postwick, Strumpshaw, Thorpe Next Norwich, Thorpe St Andrew, Witton, Woodbastwick Also from the 1861 *_Cambridgeshire_* census returns RG09/1051 Terrington St Clement covering the parishes of Terrington St Clem, Wingland, Clenchwarton, Tilney All Saints, Tilney Cum Islington, Tilney St Lawrenc , Terrington St John. This means that there are now 401,299 (96.2%) 1861 Norfolk census records available to search free on line. Many thanks to John Seakins, Sally Cutler, Steve Willgress, without their help this information would not be available. If you would like to help with making more information available please contact me on bandys@worldonline.co.uk <mailto:bandys@worldonline.co.uk>. Please remember that spelling was not standard in 1861 so you may need to be a little imaginative with some of your searches. We have to provide a transcript of what the enumerator wrote not what we think he meant. Please see the main Freecen site or my website (see my signature for a link) for details of which pieces are on line. Hope this helps you in your research.
