    3. It is reminiscent of London...... just look at http://wwp.greenwichmeantime.co.uk/time-zone/europe/uk/england/london/london-villages.htm and you will see what I mean...the same can be said of most (largish) cities in Britain and even towns (like Kings Lynn?). Thanks for triggering a useful train of thought here. 3. How much was down to the enumerator in such cases? A ggfther was born in Hempton. Sometimes this is the given parish for census - but at other times Fakenham is recorded. Can't help wondering whether the enumerator's reaction was "never 'eard of it. What's the nearest town?" on occasion. Similar things occur in my Scottish records e.g.Perth instead of Bridge of Earn, just outside the city. 3. Yes, I think so. At least some of the 1841 census records for Lakenham were in the Mancroft Registrar's District in Norwich. I have lots of people in my family born in Lakenham in the 19th century (but only back to 1836), and they invariably described themselves as born in Norwich in the censuses. 3. Just a quick think on it Bonnie- If you look at Google maps ( satellite view) you can see that the edge of Lakenham comes not far from the end of Ber Street and King Street and Bracondale. I believe that all are a old streets and Ber Street had a lot of old yards of houses that were demolished in slum clearances in the 20th century. However Fadens 1797 has clear gap between Lakenham and the edge of Norwich . Norfolk county councils E map explorer online http://www.historic-maps.norfolk.gov.uk/Emap/EmapExplorer.asp has the 1st edition OS map which might help. Enter Norwich in the search I suppose it depends on where in Lakenham he lived-the part that became New Lakenham would have been close to built up parts of Norwich. It might have hinged on who he was telling- if he gave Norwich as a birthplace because the person he was telling was more likely to know where it was or if he thought he had to give the nearest town Rosie On 22/08/2011 23:37, Bonnie Ostler wrote: > One of my husband's ancestors whom I believe was born Lakenham > 1780 identified himself in 1851 as having been born in Norwich. 3. Thank you to everyone who replied to my question re Lakenham being part of Norwich. The origins of this man have raised questions in my mind for years. He was a resident of Heigham in 1851, birthplace given as Norwich but at the time of his marriage 1802 in Hales he was of Bury St. Edmunds. Because he was a cabinetmaker, I laid that off to having apprenticed there. I am becoming more comfortable with the Lakenham baptism being him. Bonnie

    2. Bonnie Many of the villages around the City such as Heigham, Catton, Thorpe, Trowse and Lakenham became joined to it in the late 18th and early 19th C by building infill. Some of this was in outlying parts of Norwich parishes and the terms "New Lakenham", "New Catton" etc refer to these areas, as does Thorpe Hamlet, Trowse Milgate and Pockthorpe - all these were parts of the City while the old village centres remained parishes of the County. 3. As a coincidence , actor Timothy Spall ( Peter Pettigrew in Harry Potter Movies for those who do not know him from other UK work) was featured in the EDP this week as he was in these parts as he travels around the coast in his barge making a TV programme. He was reported as saying his family came from the region . A quick skim at ancestry seems to indicate he is descended from Spalls from South Norfolk/ North Suffolk borders in the late 1800s/ early 1900s. Article may still be on EDP24 online pages. 3. Good Afternoon List, (Re-sent as original seems to have evaporated into the ether!) Ann WHITACRE (various spellings), the daughter of William and Ann WHITACRE, was baptised on 20 Feb 1780 at Intwood with Kewick and said to be born in East Carleton. She married Robert BAYLEY on 15 Dec 1800 at East Carleton. The witnesses seem to be Sarah BAYLEY (probably Robert's younger sister) and James ARBOROUGH. Despite extensive searches in surrounding parishes I have been unable to find any other children of this marriage (there may, of course, not be any) nor the marriage of William and Ann (whose surname I have not yet found). The surname is not registered with GOONS. Has anybody come across this family or have any suggestions as to how I could extend the search? With best wishes, Gerry

    3. Re Murrow...Have had this reply from my cousin: i have conferred with a friend, a little older than me, today and she was not aware of any railway properties on front rd, but there are 4 terraced houses on long drove up near the signal box that were railway cottages, now privately owned the marshalling yards did exist, they loaded animals and strawberries etc there, they were alongside the line which ran wisbech to peterborough. there may have been another along the other line because there is still a train type shed there I am sure I remember something about the marshalling yards being among the largest in England. Knowing my cousin there may be a sudden message with more info if it is available. David
