    1. [NFK] Parish Surnames - Part 1
    2. Brian Porter
    3. When the Norfolk Parish Registers first became available on familysearch.org I began examining each one - generally for names in my Norfolk tree and specifically for my Porter/Portler one-name study. At some point in the process I decided to continue a practice I had started years ago on visits to the NRO and the Family History Library in Salt Lake City of making a note of the names which frequently appeared in the register indicating a firm (or at least an early) family footing there. With the thought that perhaps someone with the proverbial brick wall will discover a potential location for continuing their research, I have listed those names here - with probably about 25 parishes (or wherever my cursor lands) to a part. These names are generally taken from the earliest years of the parish registers available at familysearch.org and represent, for the most part, the commencement of the registers. But a few words of caution. Although I made a note of the names that seemed, at the point of reading the register copies, the most common in the earlier years, invariably names which sounded interesting or related to my own research tended also to be the most easily remembered. Also, there were many parishes when I simply fell asleep at the switch and forgot to make a note of the common surnames. The spelling is as I saw it. Here follows the first batch of surnames listed by parish and still in the order in which I accessed the registers. I hope they will be useful to someone. Regards, Brian - (My surnames: Porter, Newson, Gates, Bloss, Heath, Barcham, Moy, Francis, Ebbetts, Portler, Fisher, Garner, Winterton... etc.) Rushall - Blomefield, Tribold, Jacob, Algers, Barkers Ashby St. Mary (nr. 1. Re: [NFK] Baptised twice on the same day?
    2. John I think this is more likely a single event recorded twice - carried out by the Rector of Thurlton in Norton and rightly recorded there, but then also written up by him in his own register. I have seen this sort of double recording where priests conducted marriages in parishes other than their own. David Sent from my BlackBerry® wireless device -----Original Message----- From: John Francis <pintail@globalnet.co.uk> Sender: norfolk-bounces@rootsweb.com Date: Wed, 31 Aug 2011 20:44:11 To: <NORFOLK@rootsweb.com> Reply-To: norfolk@rootsweb.com Subject: [NFK] Baptised twice on the same day? Browsing through parish registers at the Norfolk Heritage Centre today, looking for my WARNES ancestors, I came across an unexpected double baptism: Clara, daughter of Samuel and Sarah Warnes, was apparently baptised in both Norton Subcourse and Thurlton on 6th July 1868. In both cases, the ceremony was carried out by F.G.Goodwin, the Rector of Thurlton; in the case of Norton Subcourse he was of course described as "Officiating Minister". In the Norton Subcourse register, Samuel and Sarah are listed as resident in Norton Subcourse, but in the Thurlton register they are resident in Thurlton. The two villages are adjoining, and the churches are less than a mile apart. It may well be relevant that little Clara was buried in Norton Subcourse on 12th July 1868, this time by William Rimington, the Vicar of Norton. So perhaps Samuel and Sarah realised at the time of the baptisms that Clara was unlikely to survive. But why two baptisms? I would be interested to know if anyone else on the list has come across similar occurrences, or can suggest a reason for the double baptism. 1. [NFK] Edmund NUNN & Sarah BREWSTER
    2. Williams
    3. I am looking for the baptism of Edward Nunn circa 1763 - he died in 1808 aged 45. Before her first marriage to Nicholas Martin in 1765, Sarah Brewster had an illegitimate child - Edmund Nunn. His name appears in the Will of her second husband Thomas Fordham whom she married in 1768 following the death of Nicholas. Although both these marriages were in Market Weston, Suffolk, I believe that Sarah hailed from just over the border in Norfolk. She was 59 when she died in Nov 1795 and I have found a possible baptism at East Wretham on 15 Dec 1735, parents Robert & Sarah. I am hoping that by locating the birth/baptism of Edward Nunn I can trace his mother's roots. John

    1. [NFK] Ancestry Military campaign medal records
    2. David Mills
    3. Casually browsing these records for my Grandfather I found a John W Mills who had fought at Waterloo in the Machine Gun Corps according to the initial screen. Machine Guns at Waterloo? Looking at the original document I found that in fact he had served in Afghanistan in 1919. This is not the only error on these records ..... It seems that somewhere along the line Ancestry's processes have gone awry. Just thought that everyone should be warned. As an adjunct: Might I repeat my request that people keep their eyes open for WWI medals awarded to W G C B MILLS and also B E B MILLS that may be on sale in antique and/or junk shops in Norfolk? I am ever hopeful.

    3. Just a word of warning - not all of the parishes are included on the familysearch images - there are about 150 parishes that don't have any parish registers filmed by them - and not all of them have the matching AT filmed. At's are patchy and for Norfolk only usually cover 1725-1812.
