    1. [NFK] fraud or business troubles 1880's
    2. tam smith
    3. Hello everyone, I'm wondering if there was any way I could find out if my ancestor was in some kind of business trouble or fraud situation....did local newspapers report on that kind of thing? I'm just curious as he travelled all the way from Heigham Norfolk to Devon sometime between 1881 and 1891 and changed his first name. It also seems business wasn't doing so well as he had moved his business from more of a high end area to a poorer area of town prior to all of this. I'm just wondering if perhaps something went wrong and he did a runner! Thanks, Tam : )

    3. Hi, yes the London Gazette is online . Just google London Gazette and work your way to the History bit and search the archive . But start earlier the first reference I found to Samuel comes on 14th March 1876, " In the county court of Norfolk held at Great Yarmouth in the matter of proceedings for liquidation by arrangement etc instituted by Samuel Matthews of Great Yarmouth , tailor . " The Norfolk Record Office has a possible document BR 164/26 , which mentions deeds re a tenement conveyed by Samuel Matthews to Bullard and sons , 1870 . And further reference in the same document of 6 rods of land in City St , Heigham , gardens in Union Place, Heigham but this is earlier 1843 . There may be more in The Bury and Norwich Post but the 19th C newspaper site has many references to Samuel Matthews .and it would take a dedicated eye to sift through them all . There may be more in the London Gazette too and under Mathews or Matthew or Saml , or variants . life is hard . soften it with a cat \\\=^..^=/// ----- Original Message ----- From: "tam smith" <tamiwell@bigpond.com> To: <norfolk@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, September 14, 2011 1:16 PM Subject: Re: [NFK] fraud or business troubles 1880's > SAMUEL MATTHEWS, he was a tailor (worked in Great Yarmouth, then Heigham > Norfolk). 3. You will have seen from the Norfolk Churches website mentioned by other respondents that the church in Northrepps does still exist The situation in Overstrand is more complicated. The medieval church dedicated to St Martin fell into the sea and a new churchyard created a little further inland; in the nineteenth century the church was again in ruins and was replaced by Christ Church (in the same churchyard). The church that you see today is a rebuilt St Martin's, including some features from the older church, and Christ Church was demolished. (The Methodist church was not built until after the period you are interested in.) I recommend Poppyland's excellent DVD "Overstrand - Our Village" which includes a visual reconstruction of Overstrand as it was in 1838. Some of the photographs in the same publishere's booklet "Poppyland - Strands of Norfolk History" may be of interest too, and there is limited background material in my own "Dictionary of Cromer and Overstrand History", though none of the Crask(e) family is mentioned. For details of these publications see www.poppyland.co.uk; you may well also find it worth searching the Cromer Museum website at http://www.culturalmodes.norfolk.gov.uk/projects/nmaspub5.asp making sure you start your search by choosing "Cromer local history and geology" from the drop-down list. -- Christopher Pipe BA DipLib MCLIP researching and indexing Norfolk history cp@wmk.demon.co.uk -----Original Message----- . . . If David's link does not work, go to www.familysearch.org which will take you to a main search page, scroll down to the Browse by location, click on Europe which will take you to the historical records collection page where you can scroll down to find the Norfolk parish registers and carry on from there. 3. Hi Geoff, Welcome to the list. Try Simon's excellent Norfolk churches site for pictures and information. http://www.norfolkchurches.co.uk/mainpage.htm With Overstrand I would think you will need Overstrand, and not Overstrand Methodist. With regard to the different spellings of Crask and Craske, spelling wasn't standardised until the end of the 1800s, and prior to that the vicar could spell a name one way on Monday and spell it differently on Tuesday, so I would be very much inclined to record all instances of the name that you find at the moment (especially as Crask is not a common name in the UK, though it may be prolific in certain areas). Some of the parish registers for Overstand and North Repps are online at https://www.familysearch.org/search/image/show#uri=https%3A//api.familysearch.org/records/collection/1416598/waypoints Pam On 13/09/2011 00:21, Geoff Roosen wrote: > Hello All, > > This is my first post to this list.
