    1. [NFK] Remembrance: Mills
    2. David Mills
    3. I have just found out that my great uncle Bertie Edgar B Mills, Bedfordshire Regiment, died on 22nd October 1918 in Yarmouth Military Hospital. He is Interred at Caister. Three days later my paternal Grandfather, William George Charles Brown Mills, York and Lancaster Regiment, died of wounds at a casualty clearing station. He is interred at Premont British Cemetery, France . My son has planted a cross in their memory. It would be good to know where their medals are. 2. Sheila WB
    3. Have today been working on the JARROD family of West Dereham, NFK. Specifically the offspring of Henry and Mary m. 1845. Their daughter Jessie was my gt grandmother and lived until the grand age of 96. I've been looking at her sisters today and have discovered another war death: Isaac son of James Watts and Frances WINNER (nee Jarrod) of Methwold, was killed in action in Flanders on 9th Apr 1917 and is commemorated on the Arras Memorial. An appropriate poignancy that I should learn about him today. As always on this day, I remember my two half great uncles, brothers Bertie and Herbert BRUCE. regards Sheila

I see a Charles Coe and Mahala in Diss , but he is 61 , clearly in the census , and she is 53 , so presumably an earlier generation with the same names?? life is hard . soften it with a cat \\\=^..^=/// ----- Original Message ----- From: "Dennis Taylor" <rdpei_taylor@yahoo.ca> To: "NorfolkMailing List" <NORFOLK@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, November 11, 2011 12:17 AM Subject: [NFK] Charles & Mahala COE >I am trying to get more information on this family. 1. [NFK] Armistice Day - Ernest George POTTER
    2. Mark Howells
    3. Hi Listerines - Sometimes, you strike lucky in parish registers. Particularly if the sexton is an ancestor. Please forgive the length of this entry from the St. Peter's Mancroft parish register. It says so much more about my 2nd cousin three times removed other than he was a member of the Rifle Brigade, died of fever and is buried in the Northgate Cemetery in Baghdad (which is not under the control of the CWGC due to political instability there so I can't get a much desired photo of the grave). ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Pasted into the St. Peter's Mancroft Parish Register following the entry of Ernest's baptism is the following written in Ernest's brother Douro's hand writing: "This paragraph refers to entry No. 2400, which is the last in this book. - D.T.P. (Douro Thomas Potter) Parish Magazine November 1918 - A paragraph in the 'Eastern Daily Press' of October 17th, announced the death, from fever, of Staff Sergeant Potter. He died on October 7th, in a British Hospital, at Baghdad. The notice touched on his athletic and military career. Ernest George Potter was the fourth child and third son of the late Douro T. Potter, Sexton. Born December 19th, 1872, almost within the shadow of the tower, the hallowed walls of the old Church, the flood of light in its nave, the beautiful colours of the great east window, and the sound of the glorious bells, were very early in life impressed on his memory. The entry of his infant baptism is in the registers with those of his eight brothers and four sisters. As a boy, he belonged to our choir, and may be remembered later by some of the senior members as a useful tenor, also as a member of the Norwich Festival Chorus. He had worked as a stonemason in many cathedrals and churches throughout the length and breadth of the land, and was a most enthusiastic craftsman and clever with the lead pencil. The possessor of an enviable knowledge of architectural detail, he had a rare vocabulary of the technical terms which are little known outside the masonic fraternity. Five years ago, he was entrusted with the fixing of the niche in the chancel, and the delicately moulded jambs and other new parts are his work. Not one of those who loved him (and there were many) may never be permitted to see the soldier's grave on the far-off desert of Mesopotamia. To them his shrine on earth must be the sanctuary of the Church of his forefathers, adorned by the niche of which he was so proud. It was built by clever hands which it seems but yesterday were so capable, and oh! their clasp-so strong, so warm!- D.T. Potter, Sexton" --------------------------------------- From the "Eastern Daily Press", Thursday, October 17, 1918. Page 5, column 2, paragraph 3: "ATHLETE'S DEATH AT BAGHDAD" "News has been received from the British hospital at Baghdad of the death, which occurred there on the 7th inst, of Staff-Sergeant Ernest Potter. A stonemason by trade, he will be remembered by many old members of the Norwich and of the C.E.Y.M.S. (Church of England Young Men's Society) Athletic Clubs. Rather more than 25 years ago he was the amateur champion mile runner of Norfolk, and perhaps one of the most exciting races that ever took place in this city was when Potter beat the mile champion of the Blackheath Harriers on the Lakenham Cricket Ground. On that occasion a great crowd of Norwich people burst through the barriers to cheer their own champion. Although his athletic career was short, he was the possessor of a large collection of trophies of the running track. Soon after the outbreak of war, although he was over 40, he enlisted. Volunteering for active service abroad, he was transferred to a battalion of the Rifle Brigade, and went to India in January 1916. On his arrival there he was again transferred to the Indian Supply & Transport Corps, in which service he saw much of India, and was employed in the fitting of contingents for service in Palestine & Mesopotamia. He embarked for the latter seat of war twelve months ago, and his family heard of his death on October 15th. This news was all the more sad as he was expected home on leave at Christmas. He was in his 46th year, and leaves a widow, six girls, and a boy." --------------------------

    3. Remembering Chief Petty Officer Thomas WilliamWatts son of William Thomas and Charlotte (nee Cousins) Watts. Thomas was born in Portsmouth. I have a newspaper clipping from our family papers announcing that Thomas' wife had been notified that he died as a POW, age 46. He was a prisoner of war in Japan. Died 30 Nov 1942. He is buried in the Yokohama war cemetery. Our Watts family are from Norfolk, mostly Norwich. I have not been able to connect Thomas to our family. I realize that it may be a coincidence that we have this clipping, perhaps it is a family friend that happens to have the same very common name. Anyone know of Norfolk connections? Thanks, Kim

    3. Dear All Many thanks for your replies to my enquiry concerning Sarah ENGLAND. Elizabeth Howard. I thought that Sarah Born in Ludham in 1773 may well be mine until I discovered she died in 1788. While not discounting the Sarah born at North Wootton in 1779, it is a small village just north of Kings Lynn and is a long way (approx 60 miles) to where she married in Paston, a long way for a 20 year old girl to travel in those days. David I am having a look through the Archdeacons and Bishops Transcripts in the area but it is hard going!. Bonnie Several of the Parishes I want to look at along the coast are regrettably not on FamilySearch although some have been transcribed on FreeReg. Jane I have tried the other spellings but with no luck. Elizabeth Pugh I have checked again the Paston transcripts and there is no doubt that she is entered as "single woman of the Parish of Paston". One thought about Sarah, why was she living at Paston when she was not Baptised there? (the two Gaze sisters were). Could she be employed at Paston Hall in the village and part of Lord Anson's Estate. Must try to find if there are Estate records available. My Regards to you all Bob Pestell Plymouth Devon.

    3. Hi Elizabeth:: I saw your name and decided to say hello again; I have no connection with what you are asking about. We have not communicated for some time and I trust you are keeping well despite living in the far north; at least when compared to North Vancouver. I am doing okay and almost have my life under control with living by myself; nine years since Beth died. Lately diagnosed with skin cancer on left cheekbone and pre-cancerous cells over the scalp; likely caused many years ago working in the sun without a hat or any sunscreen; didn't know any better. Skin cancer surgically removed a month ago and healing of the incision almost complete. Scalp treatment involves applying an ointment over an 8 week period; 8 weeks are now up and scalp is not presentable in public but should clear in a few weeks; I trust that "should" will be correct. Other than that I am doing okay and keeping busy with daily activities and spending much time on genealogy and some time on my stamp collection. Clouds and showers here today with temp about 6C; more of the same over next few days except for Thursday when we may see the sun. I understand that winter has hit Whitehorse and snow has arrived; I trust there has not been too much. I cannot remember if I have asked if you know or have heard of Rusty Reid who has lived there for 50 years and does a lot of singing & entertaining?? I have known her since high school days; she graduated 2 years after I did. It is good to see your name; take care. Cheers.
