    3. Hi, it would appear that both records in the NA catalogue are for the same man , one is 42 in 1816 , the other 37 in 1810 , so b c 1773/4 , one record says b Norwich , the other this Bartentrent , you would need to get a copy of both and the second place of birth might become clearer in the original .....these entries are simply quick transcriptions for the index . life is hard . soften it with a cat \\\=^..^=/// ----- Original Message ----- From: "Jean Greenwood" <jeangreenwood@virginmedia.com> To: <norfolk@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, November 20, 2011 1:03 PM Subject: Re: [NFK] Norfolk place name > Found the following in National Archives andf would appreciate any ideas > as to what the correct name for Bartentrent might be! > > JAMES DYBELL alias JAMES DYBLE > Born BARTENTRENT, Norfolk > Served in 3rd Foot Regiment; 4th Garrison Battalion; 47th Foot Regiment > Discharged aged 37 after 8 years of service > Covering year 1810 > > Thanks > Jean > > ------------------------------- > To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to > NORFOLK-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the > quotes in the subject and the body of the message >

    3. A good source for the Norfolk Parish registers that are extant is the National Index to Parish Registers, published by the Society of Genalogists in London. It covers the counties of Cambs, Norfolk and Suffolk. I am sure this can be accessed somewhere. Most libraries have it. My copy was printed in 1983 and some registers have been recovered since then, but it still gives you a good indication of what is available. The NRO has a listing of their holdings on their site. 3. Thank you for the info, and the speedy replies! If you check out my GOONS page, you can read in detail about my immigrant ancestor Joseph COBB (c. 1599 - 1653), as well as many other famous (and infamous) people bearing the name: http://www.one-name.org/profiles/cobb.html Best regards, Stephanie ---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Elizabeth Lee Pugh <elp@northwestel.net> Date: Sun, Nov 20, 2011 at 8:39 AM Subject: Re: [NFK] State of Norfolk PRs To: netnuevo@gmail.com Hello Stephanie You didn't give us a name to try to help you, but have you tried FreeReg? Deducing from your One Name Study list I assume the name you are looking for is COBB(E).  There are 164 COBB (and variations) born in Norfolk listed on Free Reg (one I immediately saw was from K Lynn) between 1590 and 1610. Just remember that Free Reg is a site being compiled by volunteers, and not all parishes in Norfolk have been 'done' yet. www.freereg.org.uk/ If you find who you are looking for on Free Reg you can then go to the LDS site that someone else told you about and trawl through the PRs on line - if they are there! 3. Hi, everybody: I'm trying to track an ancestor that left England in the early 17th century (probably a dissenter). I haven't been able to find him in the IGI, FMP, or ancestry. The odds are good that he was born Norfolk*, however (circa 1599), and was wondering if anyone had any comments in general about the availability of Norfolk parish registers... has there been any bombing, fires, neglect, etc. that would substantially affect it? Thank you, Stephanie Guild of One Name Studies #5587 Cobb, Cobbe, etc. * He went to Jamestown, Virginia, along with Henry Spelman of Congham, John Rolfe of Heacham, and Edward Waters of King's Lynn.

In the 1841 census for Hitcham , Suffolk, there is a Hanah ( as spelled ) Flack , 70, F.S. , Y living with Rhoda Hales , 75, Y , and a Maria Flack , aged 30 , Y. This might be Simon Flack`s widow . Bill Atkins Bill There is a British Army WW1 Medal Rolls Index Card which reads Baines William E. NORF R. 18446 LAB. CORPS 207760 Awarded the three usual campaign medals. Theater of War - France. His transfer to the Labour Corps is interesting. There is more information here http://www.1914-1918.net/labour.htm. Unfortunately, none of his enlistment or service record papers seem to have survived the Blitz. Richard Spink
