    3. Hello Listers, I believe that some of my Norfolk ancestors went to Galway in Ireland and had a baby boy between 1930 and 1935. Although I am subscribed to Ancestry, I cannot access the Irish records without paying again. If there is anyone with the full subscription and would be willing to do a search for me, could you please contact me off-list. Many thanks, Sandie

I don't have anything special to research so if anyone has anything they would like me to have a look at, I don't mind giving it a go so as not to waste the day. (I live on the other side of London and it is a four hour round trip). No promises mind. If it's anything not Norfolk related, you best contact me off list or we will get told off. I am told that the LDS records are currently being held there while their London office is being renovated so I wil have access to them as well. Richard Spink

    3. Dear listers, Although many records are lost sometimes the Bishops transcripts are available. The minister had to deliver copies of the registers to the archdiocese at regular intervals. The originals are better and sometimes the copies have parts missing-e.g. I have one marriage that lists the bride and groom but the transcript failed to note that she was a widow which led my research in the wrong directiuon and in another there was some nice little jibes -"people are going to the next parish because of the poor state of the Church" (the steeple had fallen down). As I do most of my research from L.D.S. films because I am in Australia I always go for the original records if possible. Another good research tool is to look at the accounts books and manorial records if posssible. The manorial records are great because they often follow the ownership or leasing of the land back through several generations when it changes hands and even sometimes mention wills or parts of them is their records. Sometimes wills are mentioned which no longer exist. Hope that this helps, Anne Ringer

    3. I'm looking back in the 16th century as well. Many parish records are to be found digitised by the LDS Family History web sites however many were lost as a result of the English civil war and commonwealth (1642-ca 1660). Other parishes appear to have been slow to start recording and their registers only start in the late 16th century. Ned Ramm -----Original Message----- From: Stephanie Ray Sent: Sunday, November 20, 2011 3:49 PM To: norfolk@rootsweb.com Subject: [NFK] State of Norfolk PRs Hi, everybody: I'm trying to track an ancestor that left England in the early 17th century (probably a dissenter). I haven't been able to find him in the IGI, FMP, or ancestry. The odds are good that he was born Norfolk*, however (circa 1599), and was wondering if anyone had any comments in general about the availability of Norfolk parish registers... has there been any bombing, fires, neglect, etc. that would substantially affect it? 3. Hi, small question , huge answer. Each parish holding its own parish records will have suffered or not over the last 400++ years .........it all depends on the parish Parish recording of bapts marriages and burials started in 1538 but there are a good many parishes which start perhaps 1558 after the rumpus caused by Ed Vl and Mary 1 . My own home parish starts in 1538 , but has a big gap 1639 - 1660 for the Civil War , Grimston in Norfolk on the other hand has a complete register and the parish clerk of the time kept a secret parish register during the Civil war which was added to the main register after the Restoration . Pulham`s registers were safe in the basement of the Rectory during the last war until a pipe burst and flooded the cellar .......Walpole St Andrew was broken into and the registers stolen within the last 40 years and were never recovered . ...So it depends which parish . life is hard . soften it with a cat \\\=^..^=/// ----- Original Message ----- From: "Stephanie Ray" <netnuevo@gmail.com> To: <norfolk@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, November 20, 2011 3:49 PM Subject: [NFK] State of Norfolk PRs > Hi, everybody: > > I'm trying to track an ancestor that left England in the early 17th > century (probably a dissenter). 3. Stephanie, not all parish registers from Norfolk have been transcribed by the IGI, many of the original records (scans of registers as opposed to transcriptions) are available to view on the IGI website itself, you just need to know where to look. Those that aren't are usually available to view on fiche/microfilm at the Norfolk records office in Norwich. It all depends where you are looking at, though it sounds like north Norfolk. The only records I know for sure that were affected in the manner you describe are for St Nicholas Church in Great Yarmouth, bombed and burned out during WW2. Not all were detroyed and it is the later records that suffered from this. IGI parish registers are available here https://www.familysearch.org/search/image/index#uri=https%3A//api familysearch.org/records/collection/1416598/waypoints Lists of what the NRO has are available on-line at the NRO website, you just need to know how to search it http://nrocat.norfolk.gov.uk/DServe/DServe.exe?dsqServer=128.60.0 31&dsqApp=Archive&dsqCmd=Index.tcl Regards David -------Original Message------- From: Stephanie Ray Date: 20/11/2011 15:50:45 To: norfolk@rootsweb.com Subject: [NFK] State of Norfolk PRs Hi, everybody: I'm trying to track an ancestor that left England in the early 17th century (probably a dissenter).
