    3. I think I know the book you mean Penny, and I've been racking my brains for the title. The closest I can come up with is The International Genealogical Directory. (Not to be confused with the IGI when you're googling! :) If it is the same one, then it was originally printed in the early 1900s. This is the second edition. http://archive.org/stream/internationalgen00convuoft/internationalgen00convuoft_djvu.txt Though I have to say that I'm not 100% sure, as I also have 'Big Red' somewhere in the mix, but that might have been the nickname of the book. :( I have to say that I doubt whether in these days of 'instant' communicaton that it's still being printed. 3. Hi, my apologies for sending this request to the Norfolk list. It could sort of be sent to any list but the reason I've sent it here is that I believe there are members of the NFHS who will know what I'm talking about. Many years ago there was a book that acted as a directory of all sorts of things. A great deal of time before the publication deadline anyone could submit an entry of who they were, their contact details and what lines they are researching. Then, when it was published it contained sections for various bits of information, with one being a genealogists section. It wasn't just a "yellow pages" of genealogists, it had loads of info and the only copy I had ever bought, I found I was referring to pretty much on a daily basis. It was in essence a genealogy bible. Can anyone remember the title and if it's still being printed? I'm desperate to get hold of a copy and also to get back into the next issue.

The original query makes no suggestion that its a Norfolk related family. 3. Apparently caveo takes the dative when it means "take care of", so illis. However, the R in careo was only my invention, and I don't know if the inscription can really be read that way. Perhaps the V in caveo is definitely a V. 3. I think the translation should be 'I miss for ever those I have loved'. It's a question of case. The verb 'caveo' is followed by the accusative case, which would be 'Illos', but 'careo' always takes the ablative case, which is 'illis'. 'Careo' can also mean 'to be without' or 'to be destitute of'. I suppose, therefore, that the meaning might just be that, buried as he is 'in a foreign field', he is for ever separated from those whom he has loved. An interesting quotation.
