    3. No wonder I couldn't find it, I had Cambridge on the brain and looked in the wrong town :-(. Thanks to Rosie for putting me straight I found the right street in Norwich under it new name, St Benedicts Street. By following the schedule numbers on the 1871 from the Plough Inn, which still exists, it is possible to see the actual place on Streetview beside the entrance to what is now Plough Yard. 3. Hi all, I've just been looking through the posts, and at the Census entry in question. I agree with Ros that the words are "ticket writer". The reason it is there, I suspect, may be that the column calls for details of "Road, Street etc and No. or Name of House. If there was a "Ticket Writer" sign outside the house, it would be quite plausible for the enumerator to write it in that column. Just my thoughts. 3. Pat - That explains why I couldn't find Samuel White in the 1881 census. (I was curious about who was living at his address ten years on and whether the enumerator at that time had written any other additional note by his address.) 3. You might be right but why would he have a brainstorm and put an occupation where he has written The Plough , 3 King Lane etc in the same column ? No logic in it but the writing is scrappy so you may be correct. I think I am right in saying that some of the yard names changed over time and not all would have necessarily have been the same in 1871 as at other times so the Genuki or Plunketts lists might not be an infallible guide. I thought the first letter matched his F or T and the second his lower case a which seems to have an open top in some names. I was thinking water for the second part because there is a water something or other close to the river on Lower Westwick St. but as it is Upper I ruled it out . Puzzle-an excuse to go and have a look next time I am in the city-will all be demolished or conserved out of recognition. 1. [NFK] Suket Whater - what is this?

    3. It says formerly housekeeper on the form and gives her birthplace as Hockwold and her daughters' birthplaces as Methwold so they are from South West Norfolk. Not quite sure where Upper West street is these days but I think it was near Pottergate which five minutes walk from Westwick Street. If you can read the Yard name ( Norwich yards were famous -or infamous-you can google Plunketts Norwich and maybe find images or details of the yard they lived in) Thank you Rosie for your suggestions. Do you think the writing I am struggling with might be the name of a yard? I have been googling away and am no further ahead. Of course I have been side tracked in reading about life in these yards – something very foreign to me. One place said that many of the yards in Norwich had unusual names. Wendy in New Zealand

    3. I would say its quite a valid suggestion, I had not thought of it but it is certainly possible I have spent some time checking the earlier census, the Norwich Yard names and maps, nothing came close I can quite see the bleary eyed and tired enumerator taking his eye off the ball and instead of writing in the yard name as he has on other pages, he wrote what may have been the occupation the householder put down, before the enumerator wrote Show Card Writer which is the proper name for a ticket writer The first word looks like ticket, the second the first letter I thought was a K for some time but I can see it being a poorly written W It may be in the wrong place on the form, but mistakes happen, the enumerator was poorly paid and had little time to do all he had to do, they were also fined some of their fee if the returns were late making urgency paramount Anyone who has done transcribing will know just how easy it is to make mistakes Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) On 28/07/2014 17:58, xpn11 via wrote: > I dont think so because it is written in the address column where > the enumerator puts additions like pub names, alley names etc under > the main street name.
