It was up after the government workers turned it on this morning, but only at the government 1940 census site and in browse-only mode. Indexing records before they became available today was not possible by any non-government entity, nobody got early access. As someone mentioned, ancestry and other sites are in the process of fetching and providing links to their copies of the images now. But it will take time to load the images, and even more time to index the records. I have not tried browsing yet anywhere - I have not got my EDs figured out yet. But I have gathered some helpful links. To find your enumeration districts, the tool at stevemorse is at: http://stevemorse.org/census/unified.html For those wanting to access the records at the government site, the following page is a good starting place, and includes some instructions. But the website has been overwhelmed and crashing with the demand, it is probably better to wait a few days until traffic dies down and the servers can handle the traffic: http://1940census.archives.gov/getting-started/ And to help create free index at familysearch, the link is: https://www.familysearch.org/1940census/ The above links along with links to other free census resources for other years is on the following page: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~thecohens/resources.html
