    3. >From the News Back Then column. 75 yrs ago. 11, March, 1937. Thursday. 1]. High Jinks ~ The presentation of "H.M.S. Pinafore" by Trinity County Band, last Saturday evening, marked the opening of the doors of the newly completed High School auditorium to the public. It is estimated that there were 500 viewers, plus 200 in the Cast and Orchestra. No public entertainment can booast of drawing out a larger crowd in Wvvlle's history. The light Operetta was enjoyed from begining to its end. Those in the lead roles were; CAPTAIN O.R. SMITH, ERNEST GLASS, LARRY CLARK, ELLIS FLOWERS, HOWARD SPRATT, MARION THOMAS, ONGIE LEE ANDERSON, AND ADELINE THOMAS, took their several parts professionaly and acquitted them selves with much credit. A social dance followed the play making a fitting end to a perfect evening. 2]. Moving Around~ Mr. HAROLD SEBRING, an USFS employee, purchased the home of HARRY BIRD, on Miners Street, last week, also the wod lot and the building in front. The SEBRING"s have moved frommm the TYSON cottage, where they have been residing, into their new home. 18, March 1937. Thursday. 1]. Plaque ~ A suitable plaque will be set soon, to mark the spot where gold was 1st discovered on the Trinity River at MARSHALL's ranch in the Fall of 1847, this is the year preceeding the discovery at SUTTER's mill, which brought on the consequent wild rush to Californina in 1848 and '49. Major READING came into Trinity over Bullychoop Mtn. in 1847, searching for gold. He found the precious metal at MARSHALL's ranch in the Trinity RIver. This important spot will be marked by Mt. BALLY Parlor of The Native Sons. (NOTE: READING is pronounced like the city in Pennsylvania and even though spelled differently, like the city at the bottom of Buckhorn Mtn. (Redding). 2] Weather ~ Some pleasant days , some rainy days and some cold March winds have been our portion this week. Rain fall is 1.25inches; to date is 20.57 inches, and last year this date 30.53 inches. 25, March 1937. Thursday. 1]. Weather ~ Winter is back again, Another snow storm set in Tuesday leaving 6 inches of wet heavy snow. The Electric went off at 11:30 p.m. Tuesday and didn't come back on again until 2 p.m. Wednesday afternoon. The Sun came out Wed. and melted most of the snow. Rain this week was 3.25 inches, Rain to date is 23.82, and last year to date 31.53 inches, Snow fall 6 inches. 2] Visitors ~ Mr. & Mrs. Goerge JOE, with their 2 children , AGNES, age 12 and ARTHUR, age 10, were arrivals from Fall River, Mass. On a week's visit with the family of SAM LEE, the latter's Father, and other relatives. On April 3rd, they will embark on a boat from Seattle for a 1 yrs. visit to CHINA with JOE's Parents. ~hum.Linda~ Words are the window to the Heart.

    3. Hi Folks, Was Major Reading in the Mexican American War? I guess what I am wanting to know is if he was amongst the Union troops who were sent out here by Pres. Polk to "settle the west" to thus protect the gold they knew was out here for the Union, knowing that a civil war was almost evident to happen.
