At least with the LDS effort at familysearch, we started indexing California yesterday, I think. At least I started arbitrating the work of the two indexers for each record. BTW for anyone interested they could use more indexers and you don't have to belong to the church to do it. The images are the best I've ever seen. There are numerous states now to work on. And the good news is...it's all for free. EdrieAnne

Don't they require certain software that cannot be installed unless you have the right kind of computer? The 1940 census page at FamilySearch is at https://www.FamilySearch.org/1940census It has a link on it to sign up for indexing.
You have to be able to install Java and they recommend DSL but I've been doing it for three years on satellite. I don't think it will work on dial up and I don't think you can do it on a cable set up without a computer.
