    1. Re: [NORCAL] New Question City Directories
    2. In one of the SF city directories I had found a Martin Hearst living at the same address as my grgrgrandfather Michael J. Hearst. I knew of no Martin Hearst but then I know nothing of my Hearst family before Michael and his wife Catherine came to California from NY. I have always wanted to pin down Michael's family but the Hearst name is very hard to search, and made more difficult by the fact that my grgrandfather is George Hearst and of course one of his brothers was William. Today I was reminded of this Martin Hearst and on a search found him in the 1897 city directory listed as follows: Hearst, Martin seaman str Wellington does anyone know what str is? Wellington? would love to find this Martin Hearst and maybe a clue to MY Hearst family. My George Matthew Hearst worked at the Examiner for his entire adult life, but I know of no connection to The Hearst family. Thanks for any help, Kat

    3. Hi Bill - how you doing..??? been a while since we talked..!!! I'm sort of guessing, but in addition I think I'm sort of remembering something that I learned doing research some time ago. I THINK "str" means STEAMER... WHICH MAKES SENSE SINCE HE IS SHOWN AS A SEAMAN... Ya think..?? - Ruth ____________________ Ruth (Grady) Skewis [email protected] -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Bill Roddy Sent: Saturday, April 28, 2012 9:00AM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [NORCAL] New Question City Directories Str is Steamer, a ship. The Steamship Wellington was also /involved in a court case - San Francisco Northern California Jurisdiction. Steamer is a more familiar term to describe the same type vessel Wilbur H.
