Marilyn I have only found George Black in one ceneus record, the 1880 census. That said he was born in New York, if that was so he would not have to be naturalized. He married Maggie Carter sometime in 1870. My grandmother was born in March 1871. various records say George was born in New York, Michigan and Canada. Another George Black in Oakland (of approximately the right age) was born in Scotland. I don't think this is the same Geroge Black because he is living with a 28 year old woman named Mary and a 4 month old male child by the name of H. B. Gibson. George died in 1894. He had a brother named Alexander who came to California in the summer of 1874. Alexander was killed in a railroad accident on 1 Oct 1874. (He was born 1832 so may have left a wife and children in New York.) The obituary said he had been here three months. At the bottom of the obituary was a note for New York papers please copy. I know the births and deaths of my gr grandafather's 5 children. Only my grandmother and one brother lived to be adults. William George Black died at age 29 unmarried. If I don't research my gr grandfather no one else will. My cousins are not interested. So I want to get everything I can on him. This George Black who was naturalized in 1862 is the right age, but still may not be my George Black.
