Dear Listers, I wish to share with you today what may appear as a tragic family quarrel: Ferdinand Elder, a highly reputed lawyer, and his wife Caroline nee Emerson were married in MN in 1875, and following a short stay in Duval Co.,. FL they lived for many years in MN before moving to WA, ending up in Tacoma, WA. Ferdinand Elder died in 1915, and by then his oldest son was apparently "dead" to his parents: Howard Morton ELDER was born in Duval Co., FL Sep. 1, 1876. He grew up with his parents in MN and accompanied them in the late 1880's to WA. However, some time in the early 1890's he appears to have left home to work on the railroad. He married a 1st time in La Crosse, WI in 1897 to Clara Mathilda Nelson of Norwegian extraction. They had one son, and then about 1902 they were divorced. Lars, May I ask if Elder is a common name in Germany? The reason I ask is that here in Sacramento we had a prominent family named El;ser also, not your Elder, they were in Sacramento in the 1870's, in fact we have an area of So. Sacramento called Elder Creek.
