The Contra Costa Gazette Martinez, Contra Costa County, California Saturday, 16 October 1875 *********************************** SERIOUS ACCIDENT - We hear that a Mr. MOORE and wife, who had been sojourning for a time at one of the Walnut Creek hotels, were severely hurt on Wednesday last by an overturn from the bridge, which crosses the Mitchel Creek on the San Ramon road, about half a mile south of Alamo. They were both found insensible, under their buggy in the creek, by some of the children of the neighborhood on their way to school. Mr. Erastus FORD and others of the vicinity were immediately summoned to the relief of the unfortunate travelers, who were lifted from the creek while still stunned from the shock of their fall. By their desire on partially recovering from the shock, they were carefully conveyed back to their hotel, when medical aid was procured, and they are reported to be slowly improving, though still suffering severely from the injuries of the accident. IMPROVING - Barry BALDWIN, who, at the residence of Dr. Corothers, has been confined for several days with a severe and threatening rheumatic affection of the heart, is now reported so much better that he hopes shortly to be out and able to attend to business again. FIRE - The dwelling house of Mr. DEVITT at Somersville took fire on Saturday last about noon and was entirely destroyed, but most of the furniture was saved. There was an insurance of $400 on the property. IN MEMORIAM - In notice of a monument lately erected in the Masonic cemetery of that place [Vallejo] by Mr. E.H. FORRESTER, over the remains of his late wife, who was Miss Mary SANFORD, of this county until her marriage, the Vallejo Chronicle says: It stands 18 feet high and weighs 10 tons. The shaft and base are cut from California granite, highly polished, and present a splendid appearance. Transcribed by Dee Sardoch To see more old newspapers, visit www.newspaperabstracts.com/
