Hi, I am wondering if there is anyone out there who has access to the 1927 Oakland Tribune? There is an article & picture in the Tues., July 26, 1927 edition of my father with a short note on how he acquired his first car. I have a transcription of the short article, but not the picture. My father, Gerald Compton, 17 yrs. old, was living in Berkeley at the time, but the family also owned a ranch near Chico & he was spending the summer there trying to earn money to buy his first car. Since I live near Chico, I looked up the article in the Chico paper yesterday to find out more of the particulars. It seems that a 19 yr. old from Durham disappeared from his home 4 days earlier & his father had offered a $1,000 reward for his safe return. My father happened to be the one who found the boy-man, & the father gave my dad a check for $300, which he said was all he had at the time. It doesn't say whether the father ever paid my dad the remaining amount or not, but I guess you could buy a car for $300 at that time. I tried GenealogyBank, but came up empty. Thanks for any help that may be available. Shelley =^..^=
Shelley, I found it on Ancestry but I don't know how to share it with the list, so I sent it to your email address . . . Hope it's what you were looking for!
