Norcal, you've helped me before. This couple was born in Maine, probably both in Washington County. Salina was a Smith when she married Edwin in 1864. They only had two children that I've found Immogene and Austin. Until 1870 I found them in Washington County, Maine. Sometime before 1880 they relocated to Butte County, in an area called Kimshew. By 1894, Edwin is listed as a patient at Sawtelle Veterans Hospital. He says he's living in Tehama county and that he's single. I've got another relative at Sawtelle who had been married three times by that time frame and listed himself in the hospital book as single, so I don't think we can assume he might be another guy. I think Salina died between late 1880 and early 1894. I can't find anything on either of these people either in the pre 1905 CDI or at Find A Grave. I found an Edward W Preston who died in 1894 but only the age sort of matches. The Sawtelle book gives only that Edwin signed himself out of the hospital both in 1894 and 1895. There's a notation that he was transferred to the 'Eastern' books???? What does that mean? The only thing I have to go on would be trying to track Immogene/Imogene (b. abt 1865) and Austin b. abt 1867. Anyone have access to marriages in Butte county for mid to late 1880s? EdrieAnne
Okay, I found him at a veteran's home hospital in Kennebec, Maine in 1895...and after six weeks he signed himself out again. An added piece of information. He appears to have contracted malaria at Red Bluff 19 Dec 1890...and his next-of-kin, daughter? Genie Birdeu? lived in Chico in 1895. I live in Magalia. On the upper end of Powellton Rd (dirt) near Innskip ,is an old pioneer cemetery . The graves are unmarked, some just a depression. Someone with a better knowledge of Butte Co history , maybe Paradise Gen Society , might have a graves list. But I think they are all unk. No help to you, just thought I would mention it. The notation you found actually states that he was transferred to the "Eastern Branch." The U.S. National Homes for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers had 11 different homes in various locations around the U.S. The Eastern Branch was developed from a bankrupt resort at Togus, Maine, near Augusta, Maine. (see Wikipedia for more info). However, Edwin doesn't show up in the Eastern Branch in 1895 or afterwards. Could he have died in transit? Perhaps he chose not to enter the Home in Togus Maine once he moved east. But, I also could find no evidence of his death.
