I have about completed research on my California names and have moved back in time to the East Coast from the 1600s to 1700 and to England and France before that with some missing generations still to find. DNA testing has been most helpful in directing my research to the correct family rather than doing it shotgun style.  As a female, my DNA isn't of help on my direct family name line, but if anyone is interested, I found an intermediary website to look at - FamilyTree DNA and AncestryDNA won't let you look at the markers/numbers for comparison unless you submit a test sample and mine doesn't work here.
