DEATH of J.B. HIGHT -- John Barckley HIGHT, a native of Pennsylvania, aged 30 years, died last Friday night of congestion of the lungs, after an illness of 2 weeks. Mr. HIGHT came to this county about 5 years ago, and at the time of his death was book-keeper in the real estate office of E.E. BUSH. The funeral took place on Sunday, from the Presbyterian church under the auspices of Mussel Slough Lodge, No. 66, K. of P., assisted by the Odd Fellows of which lodges he was an honored member, as was evinced by the number of his brothers who attended his funeral -- there being nearly a hundred Knights and Odd Fellows in line. The deceased leaves a wife and brother in this county and aged parents in Pennsylvania, to mourn his loss, who have the sympathy of the entire community in their bereavements, as Mr. HIGHT was universally liked and respected by all who knew him. The services at the church were conducted by Rev. N.W. MOTHERAL, and the Knights held their beautiful and impressive ceremony over the remains at the grave. [from Grangeville column] -- This community, like Hanford, was terribly shocked over the death of Mr. John HIGHT. Deceased was a brother of Frank R. HIGHT, the principal of our school, for whom everybody has the greatest respect. The sympathy of the scholars and teachers as well as neighbors, is extended to himself as well as the young widow in their great sorrow and bereavement. ------------------------------------------------------- [From Local Paragraphs column] -- T.L. ARMSTRONG (father of Claude ARMSTRONG, in jail at Visalia convicted of grand larceny) was killed by a revolver in his own hands (by accident, the jury of inquest states) at about midnight last Sunday at his own place where his wife had taken him from a drunken bout in Traver where he was painting the town red by firing off his gun at random. [from Local Paragraphs column] -- Mrs. Angelina G. KNOX, sister of Fulton G. BERRY, died a few days ago at Fresno, aged 77 years. ------------------------------------------------------ A WORDY WAR -- The peace of Grangeville was disturbed last Friday afternoon by a difficulty between Bert HORLOCK janitor of the M.E. Church, and Mrs. LaFORTUNE, an old lady living opposite the church. It seems that Mr. HORLOCK was cleaning out the church and placed the carpet out on the sidewalk, intending to sweep it, to which proceeding Mrs. LaFORTUNE objected, and a wordy war followed. In the evening of the same day John LaFORTUNE, son of Mrs. LaF., did not like the way HORLOCK talked to his mother, and meeting him as he was going to light up the hall for the dance, and during the controversy, hit the young man a blow in the face. On Saturday morning Mr. HORLOCK swore out a warrant for his arrest and LaFORTUNE appeared before Justice Randall on the charge of disturbing the peace, plead not guilty and was released on $100 bail. Mrs. LaFORTUNE was also arrested on the same charge and was released on bail. The case will be settled in the courts tomorrow. -------------------------------------------------------- A SUCCESS -- The ball given at Grangeville on Friday evening, Jan. 24th, by the '96 club was a success, both socially and financially, there being over 70 couples present. Excellent music was furnished by the CRANE, ADAMS and DECKER orchestra. A free supper was served in the basement of the hall by the club. Floor Director H. ROBINSON, with his assistants, Geo. LATHAM, Geo. RITCHIE and Fred LATHAM, had charge of the floor and saw that everybody had a good time. The reception committee was composed of young ladies -- Miss Amelia and Dora SUTHERLAND and Ida BLOYD. The club will give another dance on Feb. 8, the proceeds of which will go for the benefit of the hall at Grangeville. -------------------------------------------------------- BOOK SOCIAL -- The following program has been arranged for the "Book Social" to be given at Baker's Hall next Monday night, Feb. 3d, at which prizes will be given for guessing -- prizes on display in Kutner-Godstein Co.'s window.
