SMALLING, James Merced, Express, May 24, 1935 DEATH CLAIMS JAMES SMALLING Following a long period of failing health due to the infirmities of advanced age, James Smalling passed away in the General Hospital last Friday. Funeral services, at which the Rev. Douglas Ewan officiated, were held in the Ivers & Alcorn chapel Monday afternoon, and interment was in the Odd Fellows cemetery. Mr. Smalling was born in California in 1858 and had spent all his life in this State. In the late eighties, after farming for several years in the Ryer section in Merced county, he went to Calaveras county and from there to Sacramento county. He returned to Merced county in 1908 and had since been engaged in raising strawberries and vegetables on a small ranch near this city.
