Hanford Journal Hanford, Kings Co., California Tuesday, 14 APRIL 1896 *********************************** THE SUFFRAGE CLUB -- The Equal Suffrage Club of Hanford held their 2nd meeting at the Cumberland Presbyterian Church Friday afternoon. Mrs. Emma FOX presided and Mrs. John WORSWICK acted as Secretary. There were about 20 lady members of the club present and 7 or 8 men. The meeting was devoted to papers on questions of interest to the suffrage cause and several interesting discussions took place. "Women in Public Work" was the subject of an essay by Mrs. C.M. COE, and a paper on "Does the Wife and Mother Need the Ballot?" was read by Mrs. DOPKINS. Rev. N. SCHULTZ addressed the club on the comparative conditions of women in this and other countries. The speaker made a comparison very favorable to the women of the United States. The club will meet again in 2 weeks. ------------------------------------------------------- LOCAL PARAGRAPHS -- -Jacob TROESCH, who moved his bakery from Hanford to Selma a couple of years ago, is in town arranging for a location, as he intends to return here and go into business. -Dr. HENDRICKS, of Hollister, who is a guest at the Hotel Artesia, is apparently improving a little from the disease with which he is affected, tuberculosis. Dr. DUNCAN is treating him with the new discovery for the cure of that disease -- aseptolin -- and indications are that the medicine is proving beneficial. -J.H. MELONE, the merchant, is now able to be about town a little, with the aid of a cane. -Mrs. Geo. BRAILSFORD's condition remains about the same. She was a little worse a few days ago, and is not out of danger yet. -Arthur SHARPLES, of Los Angeles, is visiting his brother, Frank SHARPLES, in Hanford. MRS. J. SHAW ROBINSON is still dangerously ill with typhoid malarial fever. Dr. KEER, of San Francisco, came down on the train Friday evening to consult with Dr. DUNCAN of this city in the case and brought with him a trained nurse. Dr. KEER remained but a few hours and returned to S.F. by the midnight train. Mrs. ROBINSON has the best of care and medical attendance and she has a host of friends here who hope for her recovery. OSBORN L. WILSON, a farmer and stock raiser and a pioneer citizen of the vicinity of Kings river in this county, by his attorney, Horace L. SMITH, filed his petition in insolvency with the County Clerk yesterday. He gives his indebtedness at $1157.75, as follows: Farmers & Merchants Bank, $110 Dr. N.P. DUNCAN, $75 M. MARGOLIS, $15 San Joaquin Valley Lumber Co., $10 Dr. A.B. BUTLER, Los Gatos, $10 C.W. CLARKE, Sacramento, $733.62 Phoenix Insurance Co., Brooklyn, N.Y., $209.13 His assets are land valued at $3001, all but $1 of which is exempt from execution, and personal property valued at $150, of which $130 is exempt. A.J. WIENER, wife and daughter Mina, came over from Fresno Saturday night and spent Sunday visiting Mr. WIENER's brother, A. WIENER, of this city. Miss Mina and her mother are both clever musicians and entertained their friends with several selections on the mandolin and piano while here. The little girl is only 9 years of age but is already quite accomplished on the mandolin. ------------------------------------------------------ GRANGEVILLE -- -The GEROW brothers left this week for the mountains, to see what the prospects are for work in the lumber camps this summer. -Messrs. BALL and their sister, and Mrs. STOWERS, friends of Mr.&Mrs. STACEY, arrived from Amador county Sunday and are the guests of the latter. -H.B. HORLOCK came up from Los Angeles Sunday morning to spend a few days with his mother. Harry has a good position in that city, but looks on Kings County as home. ARMONA -- -Last Friday morning Mr.&Mrs. MOLETT, the latter a sister of Captain WILLHITE, arrived from the northern part of the state and will remain for a while visiting and looking at the country. -On Wednesday morning Mrs. JOHNSON, mother of Mrs. John HILL, arrived here from near Minneapolis, Minn., and will remain here quite a while, visiting the family of her daughter. -Yesterday morning, Mrs. ELWOOD, daughter of Mr.&Mrs. Russell EDDY, arrived here with her child from Oklahoma.
